ive been given a few imperial sockets and found one that has 1/4ww on it. it is of a greater diameter than 1/4 inch, more like half inch! its got me baffled! just wondered if anyone could shed any light!

old imperial measirement called whitworth. If I remember right 1/4 whit is the right size for a battery terminal.
 
anyone else still got their engineers pocket book, which lists all the tapping and clearance drill sizes?
still remember lettered drills?
still got yer slide rule (and can remember how to use it)?
 
aye, that's the one. mine's up in the loft somewhere - in fact i think i've got 2 - an original imperial one and the updated metrificated one.
 
I had a set of whit ringspanners when I started my apprenticeship - 27 years ago and I still havent used em!

Yer lost me on the second syllabull.. but thass cos am blonde.. not cos am yung. Cos am dirty thirty one. An thass gettin on a bit.
 
remember yer first electronic calculator - mine was a sinclair scientific.
