hi ,
could anyone tell me what is the easiest or best place to lay a cable from headlight to cigarette lighter in cab on a defender 110

Why would you go to the cigarette lighter?

Find a spare +ve on the fusebox, there will be one.

Best route would be along the inner wing, across the back of the bulkhead and in through the grommet that the engine harness goes in, then down the back of the dash to the fusebox

It might help if you say exactly what you're trying to achieve, I presume that it might be to use the halos or "angel-eyes" as daylight running lights.
If that is the case then there might be a better way of powering them than bringing the wiring all the way back to the fag lighter.

What year is your 'Fender and what engine does it run?
It does make a difference to the electrical wiring diagrams.

brian it's a defender 110 [2008] 2.4 diesel.i'm not electrically competant.and when i asked the people i bought the lights from, they said run the red cable from headlight to fag lighter?the halo will also change to orange when you indicate, from the headlight there is also a yellow wire,i was going to tap into the indicator wiring for that.so when i indicate it will also operate the halo .[to change to orange] I assume that will be ok?.the fitting instructions with the lights was'nt very helpful to be honest.the wiring from the lights are h4 connector i think.with a red and yellow wire coming off that .the red wire for white halo for daylight running .the yellow for indicator.the headlight is plug and play but the halo and i ndicator side of it is'nt.?

Briboy, what are the actual markings engraved on the headlight lens? What is the manufacturers name on the lens.

Please note you are only allowed one indicator per side at the front of the vehicle. More then one per side at the front of a vehicle is illegal. Have a look at the front of a HGV, double decker bus, 4x4 or a small euro box. All have one indicator per side at the front as they leave the factory. Do the instructions tell you to disable the factory fitted indicator?

Since the halo appears to be wired up as a DRL is the lens carrying a mark RL?

hi brendan.
glad i came onto this forum.did'nt know it was illegal to have both the halo and original indicators working at the same time.thank you for that information.I bet a lot of people will benefit from that. The only mark on the lens says DOT SAE e9.no manufacturers mark on them.I purchased from tuff rok.I'll probably just use the halo has a white light for daytime running and wont bother with the yellow cable that when wired up turns the white halo orange has an indicator.I will use the normal indicator, which has been changed to led already. So i suppose i will wire the red cable from each lamp to rear of the cigarette lighter in cab.I have just had a reply from tuff rok regards the make .they think its a generic phillips led

Sorry Britboy but if the only markings on the lens is only DOT SAE E9 then those lights are NOT road legal despite whatever the seller claims. Not being road legal has potential major insurance implications.

Vehicle Lighting Regulations requires headlights to have an approval marking. Note the expression approval mark

For your lights the correct approval markings would have the following markings on the front lens

Country code which had done the approval that consists of E + number in a circle.

Light function code and for your lights would need

HCR . for dipped and main beam

RL for DRL

1, 1a or 1b for direction indicator

A for side light

Also required

PL for plastic lens

12.5/17.5/20 etc for peak beam reference number

4-6 digit being the actual approval number

An arrow for LHT

So sorry to sat those lights are not road legal if that information is missing. If you fit those lights your vehicle is not road legal and you have just given your insurance company a get out of jail card for free.

Also if they are just sidelight why take the feed to the lighter socket? That’s such a bodge.

Are these the ‘angel eyes’ type leds that go in a circle around your headlight?

At the recent Scottish Land Rover show I could not believe how many stalls there were selling LED Bling for defenders!
I went as far as putting halogens headlights on my 90 but that was mainly so I could see where I was going!
LED's not my thing! I like to keep it as simple as possible.

Dont DRL's have to switch off when the headlights come on?

And in fairness you drive a great big brick of a thing, DRL's wont make it any more noticeable. Why not take it to a pay and play and get it covered in mud, maybe a few scratches and the odd dent, that's what they are made for.

A DRL must either switch off or dim down to being a side/parking/position light with dip or main beam on.

If close to an indicator when indicator is on the DRL must either dim down to light output of a side light or switch off. Logic being that the light output of a DRL may well mask the indicator signal.
