Hi,
I want to know what types of engines will fit into a freelander 1.8l year 2000.
The head gasket had blown for the 2ND time and i now want to see if a replacement engine can be done. Ive heard that a rover 220 2.0l will fit also a bmw m40, m42 or m43 will fit.

Could anyone please help and let me know what engine will fit with least amount of work.

rover 220 turbo lump (uses same gearbox) need to change input shaft apparentky) dont forget the ecu and wiring.
Or use the 220 box with Torsen LSD - but only 2wd - or can yu fit an IRD to it?
 
Haven't ever actually heard of a Freelander with any of the BMW petrol engines retro fitted though you'd think it would be possible with some work. Similarly, I've yet to hear of anyone who's actually fitted a rover 220 unit. Did once hear of a guy fitting a Mazda engine into one but not sure if it's finished yet.

If i fit the IRD will it still be 4wd.


Only if you connect up the rear prop which you might end up having to shorten or lenghthen depending on the physical dimensions of the box. (Or if you're really lucky it might fit a treat but I doubt it)
 
Here's a thought. Why not find out why it failed a second time and fix the problem. Yes they're rubbish engines or they wouldn't blow head gaskets so often but you should get at least 30 or 40,000 miles between failures. If it failed before that then either it wasn't replaced properly or you have an undiagnosed fault.

Liner height check?, PAYEN gasket set (NOT E-bays finest), OEM quality stretch bolts, and a PRT mod. New header tank nice as well. Later oil rail if your feeling flush.

Gotta be better than bodging some unknown quantity in.
