As you may know ive been fanny about deciding what to do, my engines on 164k and you can feel and hear it, do i 1) replace lifter, hydraulic tappets and hope it solves my problem of it sounding like a tractor , 2) buy a replacment engine and plop it in, or rebuild new engine (im clueless) or 3) buy a lower mileage disco and take engine out of that put in mine and then break the rest of the disco ? Found one on ebay for £1.2k with 80k on the clock ? Any advice much appreciated
 
Breaking and selling is a way to make money out of your engine swap BUT it is a lot more work than simply rebuilding your own motor.

It is daft just to replace the cam and followers, too much work not to check the rest!!

Hmmm, rekon i should just take the plunge and get a engine, just debating wether to break a disco or buy just a engine, problem with breaking for me is there doesnt seem to be to many landy lovers in my area :( so thinking just gonna have to be a engine and yes i would make sure i did it PROPERLY would probably be on here every 30 seconds asking for advice haha
 
As far as i know it was MUCH easier/pleasurable rebuilding my 3.5 than I expected.

Ok ok we have a garage. I call myself a mechanic. Tools and workshop space are not an issue, BUT actually doing the job was far easier than I expected.

Guess I didn't realise how simple the motor is compared to the stuff we are forced to work on these days.

The only way to get your car in and out quickly is to replace the unit BUT the huge BUT is that the hardest part of the rebuild for me was removing and replacing the engine. Once it was on the stand it was a wonderful job.

SO I would thoroughly recommend you do not do an engine swap unless the motor that you're booting back in is known to be 100% and by that I mean its pointless sticking another worn engine in there, just rebuild yours and enjoy the newness and power in return for your hard work...
 
Think i will keep an eye out for a rotted d1 v8 and rebuild that and swop over when rebuilt so i wont rush and feck up also keeps my car on road as is only transport i have

tuned td5 in a D1 would be a lovely option, but only for sheer driveability and power! no smiles per gallon out of a td5, oh and theyre ultra expensive too!

Yuck! That your V8 is sounding so bad at 164k is indicative of the level of care it's received from it's owners. That mileage is by no means excessive for the earlier RV8 & it would be helpful to know if it's ever had a top-end overhaul. I suggest you have a compression test done (following the procedure to eliminate leaking valves) to check the block condition & take things from there. Like you I don't have the ability/rescources to do my own work but would'nt write off an engine without the full story.

I do think it has been looked after got lots and lots of receipts and paper work,it has had a topend overhaul like 25,000 ago ? Maybe they didnt run cam in properly or something
 
Spent some time in a chipped td5 110 on the motorway and country lanes and good lord I thought, this is the future. The thing was fast.

I even preferred it to my v8! Just the fact that it drive so well compared to mine which I LOVE but drive like ****.

Have to say it boys, now I have squirted it, it is the v8 that it always should have been.

It's like an old fashioned v8 for the simplicity and raw sound, but a modern engine in terms of power and response. I absolutely love driving it now, it's a pleasure on the roads as opposed to a dull chore. It even feels fast! :D

Plus, the ultimate bonus would be to tune in some economy!!
 
got dad on side now :) he wants to put some money into landrover and sell his A6 and replace with a smaller car and pay towards getting landy running good so can use it for family holidays :D so future looks bright, and has putting your mega thingy mabob improved it that much? How hard was it to do , was that why you ha the dash out? :s :)

Megasquirt is simply incredible. Absolutely transformed the engine, had no idea it was capable of this kind of power!!

It cost £1200 for the fullest full kit available but can be done for a grand easy.

Well well recommend, frankly the dizzy should be shot. A lot of people are getting onto the MS bandwagon, lots of TVR boys, benefit for the LR boys is it is waterproof.

Hundreds of pics and a pretty decent how to!

Dash came out for my dashboard wiring, it doesn't need to for a regular MS install but my god it was so much easier, removing old loom etc.

Takes and hour for dash removal and will save you much more than that.

Yes there are pnp kits available but Nige does not recommend.

I agree with this because how can a pnp loom fit your car perfectly?

The working loom is a very personal thing, everyone build a theirs differently, mine certainly fits my car perfectly but **** no it won't fit yours perfectly!

PLUS, and this is the major plus, I know where every single wire goes and what every single wire does, no more fuddling around with diagrams when there's a problem cos it's all in the brain!

Frankly the loom was a piece of **** to do/perversely enjoyable for a geek like me so I would absolutely 100% recommend building your own!

Maybe, but as said I'm not an engineer. My last 3.5efi had done 165k when I sold it & still averaged 160 psi compressions.
