Hi All
I am getting a Discovery 1 in the next couple of weeks and apart from welding what jobs should I be planning on doing sooner rather than later?
I will give it a service with new engine oil, filters etc
Would it be prudent to change the gear oil and that of the diffs etc?
I can't ask the previous owner anything as he is no longer with us.
I know it has had a new clutch very recently and he has had a lot of work done to the engine over the last year or so but I am not sure if the timing belt has been changed recently
I don't know if it is a 200 or a 300tdi yet as the car is in storage and I don't have access to it at the moment.
What else should I be planning in the coming months?

I wouldn't spend any money until you've crawled all under it with a small pick/hammer.
It might be beyond repair?

Thanks Guys. I am pretty sure the chassis is OK. I know the garage that did the clutch and they were also asked to do the welding but the owner died before he could get that done. The guy at the garage (also a friend) said it is mainly the sills which will need completely replacing on both sides and the rear arches.
This is a sentimental car as it belonged to a dear friend so it will be repaired no matter what. It is not my main car so it can be done as and when.

Chassis is nearly always good on D1.
The body rots well.:(
Have you driven it?
If it drives well....get the welding done(this will be worse than you think I'll wager)
Then service everything including diffs/gearbox/ transfer box fluids.
Full engine service and cambelt if you are unsure of the history.
Brake fluid change for the same reason.
Look after the battery if it's still good?

Thanks Flossie
Welding is not a problem. I can do this myself and all the panels are available or easy to fabricate so I am not too worried about the welding. In fact I would rather have to do welding myself and know it is done right than have a vehicle that appears to be sound but was bodged by a earlier owner.
I intend to keep this vehicle for a very long time so I don't mind doing work that will be beyond the value of the vehicle over time.
I hope that makes sense

What are the recommended types of fluids for a D1?
Is there a type/make of engine oil that is considered best etc
Paul

In mine I use average oil throughout - don't buy the cheapest, but not the most expensive - however mine is not used daily.

Engine I use 10w40

Gearbox I use MTF 94

Transfer box and diffs I use EP 80w90
