Thought this would be easy to find with Google, but hasn’t been. What is the recommend grade of engine oil for the BMW Td4 in the FL1?

Thanks.

I use 5w40 fully synthetic myself, as I find it cranks over faster when cold, then I does on 10w40. I don't go for premium brands though, as one brand 5w40 is much the same as any other 5w40, and all far exceed the original BMW specification.

I use 5W30 fully synthetic - 5 litres for oil and filter change - change it every 10,000 kms approx (or when i feel like it )

I have an related question. I was never able to fit more than 5.5ish liters of oil in this thing. Dipstick is kind of at max on the level, unwilling to put more.
Is this some sign of something? Putting 5w40 and yes I change it while engine hot. No accidents.

most specs are for a dry engine..

A litre or just under of oil usually hangs around in the sump regardless of how long you leave it to drain..

I hope it is, I saw a thread around here with part numbers and measurements. Will investigate thanks.

Well part number is 7785931 which seems legit. However https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/amount-of-oil-in-td4-engine.44265/ values do not match mine, will re-measure as I was in a hurry to go to work. Picture starts from the ring, where yellow bit ends and metal starts.

Thanks, I will investigate. However what puzzles me is how the same part number can have different length. This can be very dangerous to be fair as I've been always 1l short of oil and no symptoms.
