A mate has been looking at a range rover 4.0 that has covered 150 000 with fsh is this alot for bthese engines or are they good for alot more if looked after? its also an auto.

thats good its just there seems to be alot for sale at 150000 but havent seen any higher..... yet
Dont no if my mate is going to go for it now the guy selling it says it needs 2 new rocker gaskets which always worries me if it was that simple you would fix it and keep it so why sell.

The genuine FSH is more important than the odometer reading. My current road car has near 200,000 on the clock, but has an extensive history and still feels good. I had one before that with less than 60,000 on the clock and it was a bag of ****e!

Can understand your concern about simple jobs that would be easy to fix before sellin. The other way of thinkin about it is that many people can't even be arsed to buy new wiper blades when they're worn out, so it might not be too much of a worry....might

Hi.......Have you had a look under the bonnet? If you have or own one then you'll know that that sea of parts, wire's, pipes and cables put's a lot of people off.......even though you don't have to remove it all.

Having now had three 4.0 v8's that have failed i would very wary of buying one that old if i wasn't prepared to change the engine at some point....

My 4.2 has over 200,000 on the clock. Always serviced on time in my ownership and have had no problems with it. The V8 needs servicing on time but if it is then it seems to go on forever.

......Trouble with second hand cars is that you just don't know their history......on all of my 3.5 and 3.9's i had great high mileage from them but all the 4.2's i've owned they have all failed at around 100,000 miles.....and i've been so careful when buying...hey-ho.

The people that are doing the top hat ting to my current engine phoned up to ask if i had had (or any of the previous owners) any engine work carried out as the crank was out of balance......as far as i can tell it's the origional, right number etc, and the wear would suggest it's that old and when i bought it ran really well....but someone could have been in there drilling bits out of it for all i know......

If your gut instinct is to walk away, go with that...

Personally I would be looking at a good RRC 3.5 if you want reliable and not too many expensive problems.

Hi. I have 2 g reg 90 model RRC both are approaching 160,000 miles. No real problems with either. apart from the odd oil weepage from old gaskets. Although one had a clog oil way in head that made it sound like a bag of hammers. Always service on time. If a person says they have serviced it themselves ALWAYS check everything. If oil is not clear change along with filter.

My 4.6 is averaging 60k on each engine. It's now at just over 180k. I've replaced the engine at 175k and taken a Turner top hat unit with the gas flowed heads, added a set of performance injectors complete with a Mark Adams remap, sports cats and single system, ACT carbon fibre inlet trumpets, and it goes very nicely at the moment. Problem is the cost of doing this. It isn't just the engine which needs replacement. If you are taking a 10 year old vehicle apart, then you'll find problems all over the place which can safely double the bill, such as engine oil coolers and pipes where rubber is failing and aluminium threads are non existent etc. Add to this the supply issues, with some items being NLA at Desford...

Engine oil changed every 4 to 6k since 108k, full LR Ascot service history. Serviced at the correct times. Only run petrol, not LPG. Yes, I drive it like I nicked it, but I like it for the noise, performance and the comfort.

It's a minefield. You should be asking yourself 'What will I do when the engine fails?' and have a good answer to that before you buy.
