The wooden batons on the roof rack have crumbled away after a day clearing the local scout hut's rubbish so need to put a new flooring onto the metal work as the gaps are quite big.
I still need holes to get straps through for the canoes and camping kit but wondering if chequer plate or even a plastic layer would work. Any ideas to deck out the roof rack, it needs to take my weight walking about on it getting kit on and off?

And this is what it had before.

If the wood you had on previously served you well why not just replace with wood?
Or you could go with aluminium box section in an appropriate size, should last longer than wood and look good bit it is expensive.

Aluminium Square Box Section Tube 1/2" x 1/2" x 16swg, 3/4" x 3/4" x 16swg | eBay

Get some pressure treated 2x1 from your local builders merchant.
Or a sheet of 12mm external ply if you'd prefer a solid deck.

chequer can move slightly/vibrate on the road and rub through what you carry.

i'd going to use some alu sheets
