Hi guys,

With my mate who has a 1985 110 that currently has a Nissan td27 in it. We managed to blow it up on the way back to Nairobi through the bush and the cylinder heads are cracked.

On closer inspection we need to replace the engine.

The choices are the 300tdi (my favourite as I have it in mine)
A Nissan TD27 again
and a Nissan QD32 Turbo.

Its already converted to a TD27. What are the pros and cons? Both cars are used in kenya and lots of towing, off roading and general hard work and long hot journeys.

Non-Bias advice please! p.s all cost about the same. Is there a lot of work in removing the work done in the original conversion.

Cheers

Have you considered Toyota? That would be my choice pretty much anywhere in Africa as spares are so plentiful and relatively cheap. JMHO

I was hoping for more of a discussion on if you had to pick between the nissan engines and the 300tdi which you would pick.

Like the hilux thought though.

Personally given that choice I'd go Jap everytime. Reliable and long lived. Dont know too much about the LR tdi engines as I've never owned them or driven them for any length of time.

300tdi if you can get one, as they generally give good long service , as long as you look after the cooling system , like any ali head engine it dont pay to overheat them .

today as a example my 300tdi has clocked up 220 miles at between 70-85 mph motorway work then another 40 miles through rough ground twisty narrow lanes even driving through a river, its not missed a beat

Nissan and land rover are both easy to get parts for - I have a 300tdi that is fantastic so far.

This car has a nissan in it just wondering if its worth keeping it Nissan. I like the 300 though.. Hmm!

Like for like would've less work but you seem to prefer the idea of a 300 why don't look out for either and go for whichever decent engine is available?
I don't think there's much init engine wise, we are talking about the 2.7 turbo nissan engine?
The sort fitted to taxis over here?

Hi guys,

The car ed has posted about is mine. Thanks for the advice.

If anyone has the answers - will having a nissan engine mean more wear to the standard gear box/ clutch etc?

Cheers
Peter

Well Ed, firstly you're not in AG so don't swear, secondly Ed, you appear to have a problem with the name Ed. Do you not like the name Ed ?did you have a traumatic time at school..Ed, Ed has wet the bed ? Is Ed a swear word in Africa ? Are you part of a witnesses protection program Ed and now being the only Ed in Africa they'll know how to find you ?

Come on now Edwhat's the problem with people knowing you're an Ed ?:D

I was part of a witness protection programme - yes. I'm in hiding in Africa. And now I'm easy to trace. You know my name, my car, my location. I may as well walk about with a crosshair on my back.
