This is my first landy, I've never had one before, so I know nothing about them. I do have welding and spraying knowledge, which I'm not going to need at the moment which I'm pleased about. What I want to know is what carbs are these in the picture? Also the manifold gasket seems to be blowing is this a hard job to do? It;'s a 1987 90 V8 3.5. Thanks in advance for any help. Oh, can anyone tell me the best person to get secondhand parts from on here? The passenger side door pull thing is missing, I can lock it on the outside though. Oh something else, I know this may seem a daft question, But as said I'm a complete newbie. What does a diff lock do, and is it a permanant 4x4? if not, I see the high low gear knob, but how do you put it into 4x4?:)

Hi mate,the carbs are strombergs,and a 90 is permanent 4x4 so it has a centre diff to stop transmission wind up.so if you go offroad and dont engage diff lock even though its 4wd when the front or the back wheels spin you will loose drive to the opposite one. the difflock locks the front and back together.as for the hi/low lever it does what it says on the tin Hi=4wd high range(normal) low= 4wd low range(lower gear ratio for offroad)
just don't ever use difflock on Tarmac you will blow the gearbox to bits!

Hi,Thanks for the info, much appriciated! Glad you warned me about difflock on Tarmac, (not that I'd prob ever engaged it). So you use it offroad only eh? does it have to be any sort of offroad terrain, i.e. if it's dry compact mud, or a gravely potholed surface is it advisable to engage difflock then? or do I only use it in wet slippery muddy conditions, or even snow? sorry for being such a newbie numpty, I just want to get it right to avoid any damage to the vehicle.

And any ideas as to what sort of job the carb gaskets are to do? it looks like it's got a newish exhaust system, so maybe whoever fitted it didn't tighten the nuts properly? I want to get this sorted as not only does it sound a bit rough, it will use more fuel, and on a V8 I can do without that! Thanks again, and thanks to the others who replied too. :) I've a feeling you may be seeing quite a bit of me on here :rolleyes:

Any loose surface for the difflock,you don't have to cos your still fulltime 4wd but less chance of loosing traction. Best thing to do is get out playing and try it with the difflock in and out you'll soon get the hang of it

To be honest ive never done off road stuff as yet (Range Rover LOL) but up for it if the chance come about. Dont mind helping with the spanners though if i have time.
 
Ok another thing I've found. What the hell is the red lever to the left of the drivers seat for? I'm frightend to touch it incase I shoot out of the roof or something in my seat!:eek::D ;) And once again, thanks for the help guys.

Thanks for the offer, I'll keep that in mind if I need any job that involves two people. I of course will return the favour. So where abouts in Dover are you? Just curious. And maybe we can hook up with J.P.S. sometime in the near future then? as he know's the local lanes, so it should be good. I Want to iron out all the little jobs on the landy that need doing first though seeing as it's a new vehicle that I'm not familiar with. I really don't want to break down on a lane somewhere, although being with 'Adrian Flux' I'm insured to get recovered from a greenlane (if it's a legal one). :)

No, I don't mean that. I haven't got those red/yellow knobs on my 90 anyway, I've just got a small gray one which says hi/low on it. Mines permanent 4x4. What I mean is right at the bottom of the seat, just alongside the transmission tunnel, is a red plastic leaver. It's only about 2" long. I'll put up a pic later. :)

Have you got a winch on the vehicle?it could be for engaging a pto of some sort

Thats even more uncanny! My wife was bought up in whitfield, she may of gone to school with you if you went to 'archers court', and your the same age, (she's 46) My inlaws still live in whitfield (singledge avenue) :) And yes, can't wait to get my landy sorted, wont be long. Just found out the starter needs replacing, it's got a 'lazy dog' it will only get worse, so I'll change it now. I need a reliable vehicle having a severely disabled wife, I don't particuarly want to break down on a lane somewhere.

I'll prob go on my own a lot of the time, but don't want to leave her out if she wants to come with me, otherwise shes housebound. She seems keen for the odd greenlane trip, but it's not got to be too bumpy she said lol.
 
Yeah i did go to "Archers", bit younger though 40! I lived in Temple Ewell so not moved far! Try PCM 01304 829990 near tesco in Whitfield they repair starters alternaters etc.
