I had my turbo stop boosting, although i could still hear to spinning. I checked the pipes, diaphragm, and everything else i could think of. I then had to take it to an un-tested garage.

Some how the bill went to insane numbers, I have a load of new bits (including a turbo) bolted to the engine and she's back up to power. However...

1) The exhaust manafold is letting out gas where the pipes join. They said it would seal with soot after 300 miles or so - it hasn't.

2) The engine was pumping out blue smoke like a chimney which they told me was due to them cleaning and refilling everything and it would stop shortly. It never did

A visit to a garage I trust for the MOT. They say the emissions are sky high, it hardly had any oil in it (after 2 months of very light use) due to it burning oil like diesel. A possibly broken seal when these guys did the head? Yeah they told me it might be the head causing the problems with the turbo.

I'm just so angry that it's cost me mega money and now the engine is basically written off. Is there any way back from here or should I just notch it up to learning.

what engine, and new turbo sounds like it could be passing oil

Why would they need to take the head off for a turbo issue? Doubt they've done that, just said they have so they can charge you for it. Sounds like they've used the old manifold gasket too.

Some pics of the engine bay/turbo and close up of the cylinder head bolts might help people to help you?

Thats not a mistake, its shoddy work and totally unacceptable, there should not be any exhaust leak from gasket at all, you may get a bit of blue smoke for a short while as oil is cleared from exhaust sytem after having turbo problems but they have fobbed you off, leaking exhaust is not just bad workmanship it is dangerous. They sound like cowboys. I would take it back and tell them it needs sorting out at no cost to you.

it's a 300tdi - I drove the car back from Vladisovtok about 2 years, so it's had a hard life, but I've tried to greese and re-oil more offen than needed. I had the head changed in amsterdamn just before coming into the UK as it was gone. The 'garage' did it again as they said it was shot. I didn't find water in the oil myself.

I don't have any photos of before of the engine bay but I will get some of the now and put them in a reply.

I will go back to them ASAP. I am in Norway at the moment on a little trip with the wife in the same vehicle, putting in oil every now and then to keep it running - But I will get on it as soon as I'm back in the town.

Thanks for the advice.

I had this trip arranged (honeymoon) and got the car back abour 4 days with the bad news that it was well off. And I decided that they could take my money but they couldn't take my honeymoon. So i've been topping up oil as I go.

In that case I guess the strength of your case against the garage will depend on how many miles you clock up before you take it back.

Yeah - to be honest the biggest mistake was by myself for not trusting my gut when the costs and 'suggestions' started to come in.

Although they said I had to run the engine in and it would stop smoking and the turbo exhaust would seal with soot. I've given it a good run in and nothing.
