heya,
I've got a few questions on how to get noise down and mpg's up.
I'm driving a 109 1963, 200tdi with od. but over 50mph the noise is olmost unbearable (earmuff needed). 250miles on a 70 ltr tank is not a very econimic drive.
the od squeels, and presumeably the gearbox is making the noise.

been looking and reading on forum so:
An Ashcroft conversion, incl a rebuild of gearbox .

or
or rebuilt od.

thanks

That mpg is seriously bad...whens it last had a service? As for the noise...did you do anything to the 50 year old brakes and transmission when the twice as powerful 200tdi was dropped in?

Are you still on standard diffs? If so putting rangerover ones in (or any 10 spline 3.54:1 diff) will make a huge difference to mpg/noise levels.

Storm,

engine has been seviced b4 i dropped it in (last year), new beltds, timing, and injectors. breaks: refitted all with new parts. As i figured that driving 50 mph, 50 years ago is the same as 50mph now, why should the breakes be twice as powerfull as well?
transmition: never done a thing on it.

Its not about stopping it at 50mph, its about the pressure the whole drivetrain is put under due to having twice as many horsepower under the bonnet. Everything will be made to work harder and faster on acceleration and deceleration. Many people who do a conversion on a series use a td rather than the tdi.

As for the engine having new belts, injectors etc, thats fine, great...especially if you saw it being done..i would however suggest an oil and filter change if its been a year since last time..even if you've not done a lot of miles...just start with cheap fixes to see if your mpg improves.

V8jon:, still on standard diffs. looking for an option in gearbox or overdrive forst, these need overhauling anyway. an Ashcroft converton apeals to me.

Storm: Engine in propper nick and only 400mls on current fluids.

What's whit the ather diff's, does that alse put more strain on the drive train?

thanks bas

Stick the 3.54 diffs in they make a massive difference and are cheap.
Fitted mine a few months ago massive difference.
My car s2
4.7 diff 60 mph 3754 rpm
3.54 diff 60mph 2828 rpm
7.50 tyres now dropped it to 2645 rpm at 60 mph
My 90 at 60 is doing 2261 rpm so close enough for me.
I should add i dont think the tdi is any noisier than the original diesel mainly as it doesnt need to be thrashed to get anywhere

just bolt on as long as 10 spline 3.54 diffs and you need to check whether you have filler in rear axle case as not all3.54 diffs have a filler in diff housing

if you havent one in diff housing either, weld suitable nut and use cut down bolt as bung with washer big enough for whatever you use to fill it

have one filler hole in diff housing right now, (rover axle). but looking for the diff option first to reduce mpg's / noise. as said in thread cheapest option, sourcing them is an other problem ;)
