of course you will get **** loads of us on here saying go for a landcruiser

why sell the patrol you had from new that never let you down ?

if that was mine id of kept till it died to see how many miles i could clock up !!

although- you do hear horror stories of range rovers in that 2nd user bracket

personly id buy a defender for that money...although it all comes down to what you usage needs are ???

Unless you are a masochist with a fat wallet or love getting your hands dirty, stick with the Land Cruiser.

My last daily driver was an Audi A4, which I had for 10 years and never let me down over 250,000 miles. When it came to replacement time, I logically bought another Audi A4 which has now clocked up about 120,000 miles over the past 4 years and never seen a mechanic except on scheduled maintenance. Perhaps your answer is in your question?

With regards to your options for a next 4x4, I've been considering the same options as you - Range Rover against a Landcruiser. When I'd weighed up the options, (my current P38 has done me proud for the past 11 years with 160,000 miles so far), I decided my best option is to hang on to the P38 for as long as it still drives well, which I reckon is easily another 10 years as it barely covers 10,000 per year these days.

My P38 has had a few problems, but to be honest it's only ever let me down when I've let it down. I almost got rid of it after losing faith in my local garage, before joining this forum and educating myself a bit more on how things work, and what to look out for. Armed with sufficient knowledge to fix most things before they become a problem (or have a decent idea of what to ask a proper mechanic if I'm not sure), my Rangie has had a new lease of life, mostly because I now know how to take proper care of it. I'm sure my next one will be the same.

Buying second hand, I'd be tempted by the Landcruiser for reliability, but I know I'd end up saving until I could afford a 2 - 3 year old Range rover instead. My neighbour, however, got rid of his perfectly reliable Landcruiser which he'd had from new and bought a 2 year old Range Rover Sport, which he loves. He said he couldn't fault the Landcruiser, but the Range Rover Sport is just more "fun".

Of course, if I was you, all of this would be moot, because I'd buy a new Nissan Patrol. For exactly the same reasons my next saloon will be an Audi A4, and my next 4x4 will be a Range Rover. Whenever I find something in life that works for me, I seldom find any convincing arguments for change.

Reliability is probably better with the Landcruiser, but when it does break you will need a mortgage to buy spares, if you can get them and can afford the wait for them to arrive from Japan and then they probably won't fit 'cos there are 5 different variations of the part you require and they aren't interchangeable.

Like most japanese stuff they are very, very reliable but when they do go wrong they are a nightmare.

15K will get you a nice TDV8 vogue
Will be better than any other 4x4 ! Lol

And much much more........................................................................................................................ unreliable

Not had any Landcruiser experience, although have had two Toyota's, 4Runner and Supra 3.0 Turbo. Both blew head gaskets just like good old LR's.

And once upon a time I spent £30k on an E Class Merc. A great reliable luxury machine... but did it put a simile on my face like the Range Rover? Not a chance. And I'm even talking about the P38, unloved by the masses. Maybe one day it'll rise from the ashes... after all, a few weeks ago I just saw a 1991 Classic sell for £35k.

But if you do go for L322 RR, I'd be keeping part of the pot in the bank to buy a mother of all warranties each year, in an attempt to keep a lid on costs. Be aware of the gearbox issues on pre-2006.

Stufer,

Couldn't agree more!

I've got an E Class (59 plate) Merc that cost that sort of money and a P38 bought for £1200 and guess what I prefer driving? P38 all the way.

Yes, the Merc is faultless, smooth, goes fast and starts everytime, but my truck just has something about it. It is scratched, overheats, has suspension faults, leaks, shows the 'log book' warning symbol for a past time, does 200 miles for £100 worth of petrol (lpg is f**ked!) and has a top speed of about 50 mph but it's a beauty!

I know exactly what you mean mate. I sometimes think I must have had a bump on the head to like the P38 so much. I even prefer it to both my Classics, which were great tools. And as for the Merc ML320 I used to have (same age as my P38) light years ahead of it. That was a rust bucket, hardly any on the 12 yr old 38 :)

I was in the same situation and paid £16k for an 03 plate Vogue, loved it....then paid £9k in as many months to try and keep it on the road!
