Hello again!
Can anyone tell me what the hole is for in the body work on the front of my 90?
It’s in line with a drive pulley? See pic
Is it for taking drive off the engine?
Just curious!
many thanks,

Early Ninety/OneTen models had them; as said a throwback to the Series days.
If there is a starter-dog bolt fitted I think a 4cyl 2.25/2.5 petrol might be crankable, not sure about a diesel.
The above was a 2.5P but is now a 3.5V8; not sure if I could crank start one of those?

Leftover from the days of hand starting. You might be able to get a starter dog to put on it, not sure.
You could probably start a 2.5 petrol by hand, but doubt if you could start a diesel, as it doesn't have decompressors.

just watched a couple of youtube videos on starting a land rover by hand. why do they do it and share online when they do it wrong!? FFS

As well as replacing the bolt for one with a dog I think you would also need something to hold the handle in position on the top of the bumper? I’ve seen older LR’s using a hole in the bumper, but for these old 90’s and 110’s the bumper is lower than the dog.....I wonder if it has been ever used?!? Food for thought!

Spinning over a V8 with a handle is quite easy, someone fitted a 4.6 with the starter dog on it, that was fun... :D

Never got over watching a chap crank over a 3.5 with his right hand tightly gripped around the handle, can only imagine what would of happened if it kicked! o_O:confused:

I used to have the job of starting a big Lister genny, it was really a 2 man job, but if you were experienced you could just about do it on your own. Never hurt my hand or wrist, but the bitch did put me on my arse a few times.

Some very early (prototype?) 110 models had a bracket on the top of the bumper to support the handle but it was dropped by the time full production started.

Back in the day my father used to hand start his 2.25P S11 on a regular basis, only used at weekends the battery would often be flat and require a crank start.
I hand cranked the V8 in my S111, far easier than you would imagine.

I just had a quick look at the Dunsfold collection website and they have some examples with the slot on top of the bumper for the handle!
How interesting and great that all this has been preserved:)
