i have only ever used a stick welder myself, though i have been thinking of getting a mig for the really thin stuff. eg exhaust bodges, even if theres hardly anything left.
1 thing i would check out though is the gas and bottles.
We have to have an account with a gas supplier, as you have to rent the bottles for the oxy/acet gear.
There are some places apparently that refill em though.

185TE is fine for part time stuff, can even be used for small production runs. Should quite easily be able to set up a BOC account at your local supplier, as long as it's monthly DD payment, you have connectors, secure garage and insurance.

Argoshield light gives a better finish than pure CO2 and is not much more expensive. Local supplier here recently had a special on the big 80kg bottles ;)

Connectors?

Arr i see cheers for that. are the Clarke welders alright as Ive had bad experiences with Clarke stuff before!

I got a clarke MMA job (currently in South of France - don't ask!) . My mate has a Clarke 230TE which is absolutley fantastic and will even do spot and MMA as well.

Energas (dunno if there national or just in Hull) charge 25 quid for a Midi bottle and 5 quid a month rental, they do a conversion kit to change from the small Machine Mart bottles to the Midi bottles for 50 quid. I expect it'll be the regulator with gauges, you would be better off with a flow gauge than a pressure gauge.

I use an inverter stick welder. Cost somewhere £200-400 (vague I know) and it will weld from 0 to 150 amps from a normal 3 pin 13 amp socket and it's not much bigger than a toaster. Got it from Spaldings who supply us miserable farmers with stuff, think it is one of Lincoln Electrics. You can reverse the polarity of the leads for welding thinner stuff and some higher spec machines have some sort of Tig option. The dc current also make it easier to stike and weld with. We got it to use as a portable kit but haven't used the proper big set since.
In short a versertile welder that you can take anywhere with a normal plug socket without dragging bottles of gas and rolls of wire about.

i have used Clarke welders but will not use them again, they work fine for 13 months then throw there hand in (had 4 from them over the years). Find your local welding supplys and have a look what they have in stock as they have a local reputation to keep and will not sell crap.

I thort that may be the case!

Buy a second hand BOC 240v welder off e-bay or look in bargain pages/ auctions etc. They are a bulky, but will keep going forever, unlike the cheapo Clark crap. However, if you are going down the 'hobby mig' route, make sure its got a fan in it, or it'll melt itself after 20 mins of continous welding.

we got a s/h BOC for £200 with bottle etc (btw don't let BOC catch you with a bottle!)

Rob

I have a Sealey 100amp MIG that needs a new torch, yours for £60 ( I will throw in a new liner).
Its an old non turbo version but plenty up to anything you would need to do on any Landy.
PM if you want it

why is it in the south of france then ;)

It's in the old ladies garage at the moment. When the old man died, there were various things that needed doing and as normal, we all had to do our bit. Welding kit in back of car and off we go...

Worst one was sorting out blocked soakaways on the septic tank (no real septic tank as in buried in ground and full of ****) the day before the funeral. 100F in the shade and leaking septic tank mess everywhere

Anyway, been looking at some nice professional mig welders on e-bay - take the big reels, but need dedicated supply, not a 13 A plug ;)
