Hi there, I've got a Y reg P38 and it has started acting odd. The water temp gauge will be in the middle one minute, within 2 seconds it will go to red (light comes on) then after 5 minutes it will go back to the centre (again within a couple of seconds) and so on. It happens when driving at constant speed etc.

Any ideas? I'm really stressing about it as I love my motor and I'm not loaded...hoping its something simple....

Cheers...

Unless you are sure it's the gauge playing up, driving for five minutes with it in the red is not a good idea.

Next time it does it faulty gauge or not I recommend you pull over for a bit
driving whilst overheating will only end up costing you a fortune

V8 or diesel?

Check the viscous fan is locking up when hot, check the RAD is hot all over, check coolant is flowing out of the little pipe from the top of the RAD to the expansion tank.

Could be the water pump impeller spinning on the shaft. It may spin happily at idle and then stop spinning when the engine revs.

as a suggestion could some clever chap on here design an audible warning f the red light comes on for overheating ? we do need to aim the rangie from time to time whilst not staring at the temperature :)

Just search for 12 volt piezo electric sounders:)

I'm surprised it's not inbuilt into the warning beep.. it beeps at practically everything else after all!

Don't need that on the V8 the cloud of steam gives it away. :D:D

You mean you don't drive with your eyes glued to the temp gauge
