This will make it more accessible, yes, and just cover and replace when finished ?

yes to both, theres a gasket at the bottom and o ring at the top both will reuse with a little silicone or you could by replacements

That's the new pump fitted, and thermostat, two hours total, never removed centrifugal filter, tricky wee bugger.
