What's happened? Hub collapsed? That looks like the caliper hanging down ..

Kinell, I've had a rear and a front bearing collapse (at different times) and been lucky to only have the CV/Stub axles fecked. Can't recall hearing of a disc snap!

Hope noone hurt ..

no he was lucky.. there was 3 teenage kids in the motor at the time, but he wasn't goin very fast thru a local village at the time

After the most flawless morning on Salisbury Plain getting trucks (disco`s) (not that well know potato based snack). Wet and dirty (not a bad girls dream). We got on our way to Submarine ally, 2 miles down the road. I lost all drive. My o/s wheel bearing collapsed, causing the calliper to smash and the disc to crack in half. The Wheel was off.
The big yellow taxi was called.
(Somehow every GAYLANDER in the area knew a proper Land Rover was broken-down and 3 of the tossers minced by cruising for a good time).
For the next 2-3 hours later!! My very Good Friend WLM stood by me. We got the truck back to his. And he drove me and mine back home (an hour and half round trip).
So a Big Up to WLM, One top bloke, thanks again Mate!

not a prob m8 you know that..i will get it apart tomoro eve and see what I need to get it up n running:)

no he was lucky..

i think your confusing the word lucky with reckless/stupid

sorry if it sounds harsh but a wheel bearig doesnt go from good to f**ked in one trip

its great he survived what could have turned fatal

its great the kids survived what could have turned fatal

its great that the vehicle didnt swerve into a poor family on the other side on a sunday trip out and turn fatal

etc etc etc........

in the last few days we've had this, a post of 'my track rod failed at 50mph'

and so on and so on

it takes half a day every couple of monthsdd to jack up, check bearings, check track rod ends, grease props, adjust brakes and so on...

ladies , gents we drive 2 tonne (almost) vehicles and lack of basic checks can kill.......

surviving 90% of the accidents we see regularly shouldnt be down to other forum members patting you on the back saying you were lucky, it should be thanks to people posting 'you pratt why didnt u check' giving us a wake up call...

again may sound harsh but would it be harsh if it was your family coming the other way killed by a poorly maintained vehicle????

cheers steve

Sorry to pop your bubble, but they can do. Few years ago mine passed MOT, 4 or 5 days later a rear wheel bearing inner race collapsed as we were towing a caravan on the motorway .. welded to stub shaft, complete feckup ...

I had checked all bearings, brakes, lights, prop shafts etc that week because we were due to go away!

Doesn't take much mud/****e/whatever getting in to screw a wheel bearing up in a very short time.

mot doesn't mean a thing... how often do u see.... i bought this and it had just passed...............

a correctly packed n nipped bearing doesnt allow crap in... its full of grease??

ive had a rear drivers side collapse many years ago... bearing felt tight but didnt actually check it was packed with grease so take it on the chin

that was my wake up call.... on a roundabout coming off the m4....

hands up i was slack and thankfully the cars behind missed...

cheers steve

You didn't read where I said I'd also check the bearings?

When you go off-road **** gets in, when you go wading, **** gets in .. my rear wheel bearing went from being very nice, able to pass an mot, to goosed in about seven days .. or should people check them every time they go out?

Sorry mate, **** happens, doesn't matter how careful you are.

theres a good bit of truth in there ,wheel bearings should be checked and regreased etc after any situation that may see them submersed

i did read... i also checked my bearings.. as i said it was tight but failed... what i didnt check was that it was still full of grease between inner and outer... my slack fault... felt tight enough when checked....

after my wake up call (lucky :) ) i check every two months or so..... gets me away from the missus for half a day

do a full strip of the bearings... wash with petrol, refit hubs, pack centre with copper grease , refit outer bearing , grease n torque before EVERY mot, and change 3 track rods every 2 MOT'S......

only takes a morning and have NEVER had another issue... in fact still on the same bearings in the 110 years down the line

the occasional faliure may happen due to a manafacturing / stress / pixie issue but 99.9999999% of the 'lucky' escapes we see on here year after year can easily be avoided

cheers steve

yes if theyve been submersed

Heh, I check 'em after almost every weekend, I wade a lot .. Admittedly not a full stripdown.

I do agree that many lucky escapes can be avoided, but there are times when it happens ..

No worries, different point of view. ;)

no prob :) sometimes a wake up call as opposed to a pat on the back is needed.... looking back on a lot of my driving career ive managed to get away with a lot of stupid thigs...

makes me cringe remembering that as an 18 year old i turned up to collect an alfasud to find it had no steering wheel..... punched 8 holes in a quality street lid, screwed it on n drove home... getting back with a folded in half piece of thin tin.... :0

what a complete ****t!!!!!

agaiin i was lucky but boy could it have gone wrong...

simply want to make sure we as landy owners dont end up in jail or worse from simple errors....

shock tactics may suggest im an arse lol but if it hits home with just one person its worthwhile,,,,

cheers steve

You are obviously a grade a cock.and know ####all about the situation so I suggest you shut up about summit you know ####all about. The vehicle is maintained properly and was moted 3 days before the trip so why would we have cause to suggest anything was amiss.the vehicle has been driven nowhere for 6 months.and had all checks done prior to the day out and there was no signs of any indication there was a problem with any of the bearings, the driver of the vehicle is a capable driver and doesn't drive like a cock like some do,i wouldn't entrust my kids with him if I thought he was or his vehicle was dangerous..you are a Cock
