My 1998 4.6 with 20" sport alloys seems to wander a lot.
I know that it will tramline due to the width of the wheels but was wondering what parts of the suspension and steering could be past their sell by date and may need to be replaced.
The tyres are still legal but was going to replace them any way but would get tracking done after doing any repairs

Easiest & cheapest check is tyre pressure! Too hard or too soft and she'll be all over the shop.

Mine had a matching pair of winter tyres on the back and two different flavours of tyres at the front so hitting a bump like the lines in the road launched it all over.

Also, check treads are even. Any worn at the edges will also create over sensitive steering...
 
Or just get it checked out for faults, change the right things, save money.

Then change all the other bits anyway when you solved the issue as for sure as above they will all cause issues
 
P38s aren't a fan of big wheels. They are probably one of the more sensitive vehicles to wheels and tyres on the road.

What tyres do you have fitted and at what pressure do you run them?

nothing to do with size of wheels/tyres as they are the same rolling radius, fitting smaller wheels with higher profile tyres allows sidewall flex which masks the proplem with defective suspension/steering components.

If he has 20" wheels and the correct tyres to give correct rolling radius he will suffer badly from ANY slack in the steering gear. Larger wheels and lower profile tyres will magnify and problems that smaller wheels and higher profile tyre would not show up. So to some extent it is down to the larger wheels and the pressures he will have to run the tyres at. The harder the front tyres are inflated the lighter the steering becomes and the more inclined it will be to wander.

Agree'd mofo large wheels and rubber bands on the rims tends to enhance tramlining in my humble experience....

yes tony thats what i & you are trying to explain but imo id run a 20 "tyre pressure @ standard pressure for a !8" wheel to eliminate firstly,ps happy new year to you. oh & has alan been about recenly ?

Same to you. Alan came back from his holiday home late December and has posted a couple of times but not as much as usual. Will give him a bell later in week.
