Me and a friend would like to do a weekend laning in wales and was wondering what the best lanes are to do. Would like the most challenging wales has to offer (as challenging as lanes go anyway) and obviously a route that would take 2 days.

Anyone have any ideas where we should go for? Also what maps we would need would also be a big help!

Thanks

Have a look at the section known as greenlaning and all the answers are available.

If you are expecting a flood of posts regailing you with a plethora of lanes and places to go. well erm expect the winds of silence to blow swiftly through this thread.

Nobody on here been laning in wales?!

Think you'll find loads have , but that youre going about it all wrong.
People who have spent loads of time and effort researching routes and checking with councils for the latest on their status are unlikely to just give that info to any Tom, Dick or Ricky who asks and whos behaviour and appreciation of green laning rules is unknown.
Maybe read some of threads in the laning section that tell you how to do your own research and what maps you'd need.

Just an idea like, otherwise I fear you may be waiting a while :)

Or you can do what I do, learn to bake cakes and bribe your way into joining a group who know what theyre doing :D

A post like that is not really the way forward. If you want a challenge go to a pay and play site.

Be aware some rights of way in Wales can be deadly if you don't know what you are doing and where you are going. Perhaps more importantly some of the best scenery is in remote areas where there is no nearby support and no phone signal.

ask nicely and some kind soul ( of which there are many) may take you under their wing and show you some routes.
but as Kipper pointed out, public replies of there is a lane at xyz are highly unlikely and may well be removed by our god like moderators ( creep creep).
otherwise you're royally stuffed.

I just thought somebody would be kind enough to point me in the right direction of a few decent lanes. I dont want to drive all that way to find the lanes I have chosen are just some dusty roads with a few puddles, not really much point. I will get all maps myself and check with local councils before I go.

It seems a bit of a waste to buy numerous maps trying to find something that may look ok when somebody on here has the experience of the ones that are worth going to and the ones that are not.

They are public roads so im not sure what the big secret is.

That's right fook the great views on them dusty lanes with little puddles.
Do us a favour and find the local pay and play site.

Youre right they are public roads so they will be on any road map of the area.
people dont like giving routes away that they have spent many weekends putting together by driving as many as possible and marking the good ones as they go.This entails driving on some dusty boring tracks but most on here have done all the hard work for their routes so they are not likely to give them away.

mate im based in south wales although i dont do that much off roading at the moment.
people will be cautious of giving any lane info out as if suddenly theres a large influx of people driving the lane and disrupting the neighbours chances are it could be closed or at least have complaints from local residents. also driving the most challenging off road can damage the ground and is probably best used on off road sites and pay and play where if you rut up the land nobody cares.

chances are that people will only give you any info when they are confident that your not going to drive around finding the deepest mud to try your new winch in, or the biggest tree to wrap a winch around. do some searches on google, your bound to find the famous ones and they are generally famous for a reason.

And you wonder what the rest of us do........ when you go and see some of the Muppets that go and just do a few of these dusty lanes with small puddle you will understand why some of us don't just leak out info.

Just buying Maps don't tell you what the good ones are, they are the basic building blocks of the trip, a little bit more foot work then that is required, maybe what some consider good others don't.

I arranged a two day trip in Mid Wales last November, and done hrs and hrs of work on finding some gems for our group to do, checking with the council, guys on here I have got to know though just chatting, members from the club that I belong to and speaking to GLASS rep for the area. After all that still had one lane shut with a TRO when we got there.

So do some foot work first, get to know people and you'll get more info, show the people you are asking that you are serious about things, to many just pop on here and say tell me, tell me.

Once you have done the foot work you may realise what the secret is....and understand why people hold back..........

I will be doing an other trip this year to Wales, and yes it will entail a lot of hrs just researching the lanes, hrs chatting to people, and on the phone, and using some experience from other tips, will prob be more hrs foot work then actual time on the lanes, so no I will not just tell people I do not know, nor will others.

Discodad knows what can be seen, one of those dusty puddly lanes gave us one of the best views we saw at dusk during the November trip last year, also knows how much work can go into a trip, he's been involed in sorting routes and he's in our group.

Thanks for the helpful replys.

I dont expect to be driving through deep mud just for the sake of it or climbing mountings but I do want it to be as interesting as possible. Maybe a bit of rock crawling or a river crossing would be nice. I have loads of flat lanes within 5 miles of my house.

As for the scenery, im an artic driver and travel the country every day so that dose not really interest me! I haven't brought a defender to look at scenery!

If somebody asked for advice on changing a clutch for example, I would tell them. Not say "it took hours for me to work it out so find it out for yourself"! I dont really see what the difference is. Just one landy owner helping another with the same interests.

LRO has a feature on North Wales green lanes this month and there are clubs up here that organise green laning every month. Might be worth joining a club and going on one of their organised trips?

The difference is, in telling someone how to change a clutch there not going to hurt anyone else or there favourite pastime if they get it wrong.

If we go around publishing our favourite lanes then the w&*kers who are out to fling mud and have a good time(im not at all saying this is you by the way) will damage sensitive roads and surrounding areas(because not everybody is bothered about staying on the track). The road gets churned up and muddy and the council close it by placing a TRO on it. The councils will quite simply not keep repairing the lanes for the morons to keep destroying them.

Its simple cause an effect really. Its cheaper to close them than keep repairing them.

Im pretty sure that you PM'd me before and my offer of a trip out still stands. When im around and about ill quite happily take you out for the day.

In the meantime, have a read of this.

Im just very lazy and trying to do it the cheap way! I think a new thread needs to be started on a mid wales green lane trip! I just need a guide to help organize it!

Plenty of us are happy to act as guides.

Interesting- I'm trying to picture you dressed in navy and a royal blue top , with badges but can't see it- now if you said you were happy to act as a Brownie, well that would have been sooooo much easier :D
