i'm having real trouble with the nut/bolt that holds the viscous fan to the water pump.
i've read every post i can find but still not entirely sure that i'm hitting the spanner the right way??
i've got a viscous fan spanner on it and hit it with a hammer - left to right (when looking at the engine standing in front of the car)
can anyone confirm - is this the correct rotation??? ( i think its the way the fan turns??
thanks

I have never really had much luck getting the viscous nut undone using a sharp rapid tap from a hammer on the spanner.....

For the L322 I made a holding spanner to fit the pulley bolts to hole the Waterpump still so I can apply force to the nut spanner....

I found the sizes for this on the internet after a bit of looking, maybe a similar search will turn up a set of dims for the P38 Doozel Water Pump pulley bolts.....

It made a frustrating job, so much easier.

You need a proper heavy 32 mm spanner not the poxy lightweight pressed out of cheese things you can buy on eBay. They just flex and take all the sting out of the blow. A proper spanner and a one pound hammer moves them every time.

got it!!!
thanks folks. a cheap laser spanner (sorry Wammers) and a bar wedged in to hold the water pump pulley. replacement radiator from Island 4x4 now in place. just got to fill the system again. fingers crossed.
many thanks to all

No problem. Think the point is if you have a proper long series 32 mm spanner in your tool box you don't need a cheap Laser spanner. :):)

yes, agreed. i'm afraid i'm too much of a bodger to have such high quality spanners. i also wasn't quite sure whether i needed a 32mm or a 36mm. the laser cheepo one was double ended.
all back together again now and running fine. when resetting the windows (battery had been disconnected to prevent the missus nipping down to the shops with no coolant) the rear window now won't close using the drivers buttons!! blinking P38's - there's always something.

I know this is an old thread, but I just came in to see which way the fan goes to undo. My 200TDI Disco went clockwise to undo the fan, but my current P38 goes anti-clockwise to loosen, (2002 reg!)

Just for info, I managed to loosen it with a large adjustable spanner and a slightly oversized spanner, (11mm), on one of the three pulley bolts and used a second pulley bolt to apply pressure against the adjustable spanner! If that makes sense? Came off really easily.

P38 diesel clockwise, petrol anticlockwise.

Remember this, Viscous fans ALWAYS undo in the same direction the fan rotates. That must be about the fiftieth time i have typed that information.
