Desperate for advice, i experience vibration on my 90 defender 300tdi at 20mph, but it seems to improve when above 30mph. I have changed the uj's in front and rear props, i have removed front prop and the vibration remains, but when rear prop removed the vibration was all but gone?.
I have a 2" lift and also have rear cranked trailing arms fitted , i have read numerous forums which say the most likely reason for the vibration is the front propshaft uj's binding , but my vibration is still there when run without front prop so this cant be the reason. i dont want to invest in a wide angle rear prop if its not going to stop the vibration.
Has anybody changed to a rear wide angle prop only and seen the vibration improve, our could the issue be something completely different , like the rear diff?
be glad of any advice as im pulling my hair out :frusty:
cheers
Rob

So you have a 2" lift & want every thing be alright.

Sorry mate but it don't work like that. Put your hand in your pocket & do it right.

As ive said im looking for advice, i would have no problem spending money if i knew it was the cause, but most people blamethe front prop for vibration but mine is something to do with the rear.
what do you mean by do it right (what do i need), could you explain further i bought the vehicle lifted around 2 months ago and am very new to landrovers/offroading
cheers
Rob

Sorry don't mean to offend you but we get a lot of newcomer's on here who can't be asked to do a search to start off with.
I took my front off yesterday just to find out how much vib is coming from the back end. It is only there around about 35mph, but when I put the front on it's about 55mph & bad.
I have a new front axle with drilled out swiel housing's & a double cardon prop that's going on in the next few week's.

is it really bad vibration, if so then your vibration is due to knackered front panhard rod bushes! ive had tis loads of times and it always the same thing...shakes the steering like buggery!

Had new panhard bushes. Mine had **** steering after the lift, so put in correction bushes for now, but new axle being put in soon. Only thing left is double cardan prop.

im just doing the swivel bearings on my disco the whole front end of mine shakes like fook at 35/40 mph could be that on yours

Interesting. I've just changed (or more accurately - added) the steering damper, new adjustable panhard rod & bushes and I'm STILL getting the dreaded death wobble at 45-50mph. Only did it once today though and it definitely isn't anywhere near as bad as it was prior to the damper going on.

try the steering ujs i changed all the bushes and ball joints on mine and still had the same problems until i changed the ujs

Remove the rear prop and see if the vibration goes!
I had to fit a wide-angle rear prop on my 90 to get rid of the vibrations.

No the vibration seems to come from the body of the truck with a little judder in the steering. I dont think its the front at all because it was still the same with the front prop off. It could be the rear prop because the vibration is minimal when the rear prop removed, but i think it may be coming from the rear diff and because the prop isnt connecting the diff to transfer box its reduced the vibration?
could the diff cause a vibration.
Rob

Yes.
I'd start by dropping the diff oil and seeing what it's like and whether there's any swarf or metal bits in it.

I will do that asap, hope it is as its driving me mad not being able to find the reason.:crazy::crazy:

Going back to the OP - vibration goes with rear prop removed?

Wonder if prop out of balance or assembled out of alignment at the sliding joint?

Mine started doing this after I removed half of the rear prop to strip the hand brake drum. Put it back together and the vibrations started. Pretty sure it's the rear prop binding so will check when it gets back from MOT duties. I too have a 2" lift and do not have wide angle props and never needed them.

I've got exactly the same thing, recently i took the rear prop off and the hand brake shoe and it shaking at 40 to 50 then fine. how can i fix this? and what do you mean by binding?

Oli

I have 2" lift also but nothing else and have had no problems at all??

I put TDCI props on mine few months ago as they are stronger and more angled!
Might be cheaper than double carbon.
