Has anyone been running the veggy oil in their TD4 's ? Now that the weather is warming , I am begining to think of putting a little in the tank but just do not have the nerve to try it. 2003 BMW engine. I know that it works fine on the older types but how about these common rail jobs?
My neighbor has been using the rapeseed oil 30% all winter now in his Stilo fiat with about 30 k driven so far.

Mikroll . . .Going to give it a try come the warmer weather, the only problem with a freelander as far as i can gather is the two pump system,and as the veg rakes up the ****e from the bottom of the tank, a spare filter and a pump for back up ,but as i fix my own motors any how this isn't a problem, gonna try 15% and after say two weeks gonna check the parts ,or change them,will let ya know how it is , or isn't,the td4 has a Bosch pump and these are best for this , but it is said that the Lucas pump is not so good , there is lots of people running motors on 50% mix with no problems ,but as yet i haven't known any freelanders on it. . . Just a question about changing the filter. Is that a big deal to change? I like to do those things myself if possible. And anothe Q. The oil drain plug on the engine is steel and the sump is alloy, Right? Mine has the plastic cover rivited shut, and the oil has always been removed with the suck system out the dip stick hole. That means I have to use a shop who has the vac system oil changer. I assume that is to prevent leaks problems with the steel/alloy junction? What do you say continue to change oil that way or am I a little too uptight about it?

Good questions, the filter on the td4 is a pig of a job it is located under the rh wheel arch as you look into the bay, it is housed in a plastic cowl it is best to soak it in penetrating oil for a week before you attempt to do the job [as it gets jammed in] but once you've done it, put Vaseline on the inside of the cowl to make the job more easy next time,as for the sump guard , i modified mine so i can get it off quick , some say this weakens the protection by doing away with the rivets , [but i very much doubt it ] the sump bolt is not a problem,but i fitted a fiber washer as opposed to the copper one. . . mines not the td4 (L) but its on a 50/50 mix......constantly hungry though!!!! um...chips....
 
bang it in 50/50 or if yer scared just bang 10 litres of asda's finest in to a tankfull ;)
 
Big letters all over my handbook - not suitable for biodiesel - im guessing that using veggie might ever so slightly invalidate my warranty???
 
thats a knockin bet mate.


on the plus side. all the money saved can be put aside for the rebuild fund.
(possibly sooner than you think).

says the same for my 2005 VW golf - something to do with euro 4 engines
 
theyre just covering their arses! Can you imagine what would happen if some of the many numpties out there decided to 'refine' their own fuels!!!! No manufacturer would like to be seen to be endorsing this type of thing. The germans have been running on pure stuff for years!

I had an old diesel merc that said use up to 50% kerosene in the owners hand book - I don't think that the manufacturers are concerned about people refining their own fuels more to do with premature wear or damage - of what I don't know - some say pump seals, others pitting of pistons.

Beggared if I know - just says "no" on the filler cap.
 
the only problem with using veggie oil is that it is thick and gloppy. it clogs the filters and the pump but because it is an immiscible liquid it is ok to mix 50/50 with derv as this thins it to a point that it doesn't clog ;)
 
Na. . . more fun going to asda and filling three trolly's up wiv the stuff and watching peoples faces . . .Ming :)
 
the germans like it cos theres no duty to pay on alternative fuels! Given that its an excellent lubricant I cant see what harm it can do
