Hi
The 3 Amigos appeared on my 98 Petrol Freelander some weeks ago.Took it to local Garage who had to get someone in to read the fault code as his unit does not "speak Landrover". Fault code said Shuttle Valve so we replaced the entire ABS Block with one from a 4x4 Breaker. Lights still on!
We have checked the wiring at the HDC switch and we have changed the Brake light switch but the 3 Amigos are still there.
The MOT is approaching and my Mechanic admits to being at a loss as to what to do next. Can any forum members please make some suggestions as i am at a loss as to what to do next.
Many many thanks.

Nick.

Thank you very much for your reply. Something else i have noticed is if i am driving and cut the engine and then re start it the lights all go out, everything works ok, even the hill descent works and you can hear the the ABS pump start up to brake you. But, the second the wheels stop turning the lights come back on! I know its strange but do you think this indicates the ABS sensor and do you know how they are checked?
Many thanks.

Nick.

sounds like it could be, mine was doing the same, and it turned out to be an abs sensor, check for resistance with an ohm meter, do a search for abs sensor testing. should read around 1k (1000ohms)

Usually the front ones go 1st.

it could be a broken or loose reluctor ring, or a worn wheel bearing, either check with an ohm meter individually, readings all posted if you search or get a diagnostics report.

Hi ive had 3 amigos problem for some time on my R reg freelander.I ve found a way of clearing them. This may sound strange but worth a try,Turn ign on pump brake pedal until TC light flashes then turn ign off and back on wait for lights to go out may take a few goes.been doing this for some time but recently would not work so after searching forum found another solution, remove brake fluid level wire from resevoir spray cons with switch cleaner then pump brake pedal as above worked straight away for me just had quick drive and all ok.Hope this works for you.

Pumping the brake pedal 10 times in the first 10 seconds after the ignition is turned on diasables the traction control until vehicle speed reaches 4mph, then TC is enabled again. This will power the yellow TC, yellow ABS and yellow HDC fail lamps on the dash until it's moving at 4mph, to help with fault finding the lamps.

Why would anyone need to do that? The time tc is most usefull is when pulling away!!

Can be used for circuit testing for diagnostics. Disables the accelerometer sensor at the same time too I think and also the signals from the rear wheels. Came across it in rave some years ago when fault finding the 1 yellow lamp fault. I see it as a way of seeing if the computers are responding/running in the event of a fault.

Sorry (mr Hippo) thought i was being helpful only joined today to pass on this info, but i am only a junior member of 65 years hey ho!

Hi. There's nothing wrong in your post. We like peeps being helpful. It's what makes the forum. It's good for peeps to try new things. There's always the chance it may clear the codes. Out of all the codes possible we're not sure which clear automatically or need a code reader to clear them.

Welcome to the forum.

I think i'm going to try out just to see. The TC on my V6 is'nt as on the ball as my old 1.8 50th anniversary model was. Although the brakes are better on the V6!!

I was thinking of disconnecting abs sensors to see if mine would come up with a different fault code for each one. Also disconnecting the accelerometer sensor to see what codes this produces. In the hope we would be able to tell from peeps codes what is wrong with their Freelander. We've had several potentual accelerometer sensor failures recently but knowones sure it's that without changing.

That's not a bad idea. I did the same thing on the engine ECU on my MG and the Freelander so I know what sensor causes what fault code.
I do know that one amego is often the accelerator pedal switch, even though the fault code says it's the TPS!!

If you can't find the solution prior to mot time then fit this ,
MINI SMD TIMER SWITCH TIME RELAY 1 TO 40 SEC KIT 10A Delay Off Switch 12V | eBay
Easily spliced into the loom at the ABS ECU under the seat , wired to all three amigoes and set to 4 secs . NOT a solution but if the three functions are working on the car then a cheap way of getting it through MOT and then allowing you to repair at leasure .

Gents.
I can only apologise for my appallingly bad Manners at not giving a resolution to this thread.
It was indeed the front offside ABS sensor. Took it to a Land Rover Specialist who correctly read the fault codes with a proper machine.
Very sorry about not posting this before. I am guilty of one of my own pet hates in connection with an Internet Forum.

Mine also has 3 Amigos now, done the obvious, Now I suspect the accelerometer......I swapped it out for one from a VW golf. They look the same.....but still no joy.......

From what I remember, a faulty front ABS sensor only shows 2 of the Amigos......as does a faulty brake switch. Are the rears the same?

Anyone know what the other brake switch does, the HAL effect one located at the top of the normal one?.......Is there anyway to test it?

All Ive got left to check now is, both rear reluctor rings ( suspect maybe crap or rust has fallen in there)

Or last resort the ABS pump?

Anything else I should check?

Also on the golf I can recalibrate the sensor with software called Vag com....but I have no diags for the Hippo? Could it just need recalibrating?
