Well folks after two weeks of head scratching i finally got the old girl to fire up,she is a 93 RRC 3.9 lhd.I bought a Janspeed single turbo conversion of e-bay last year,the project was on hold when my garage was getting re-furbed.I had problems trying to get the Zytek ecu to spark and pulse the injectors.After getting a pin out of the ecu from Zytek,the ecu was found to be knackered!Loads of mud inside it,so i guess it was swimming in its old RR at some point.Thanks to the guy that sold it to me for saying it was working!!:(
I swapped the inlet and wiring back to the 3.9 gear on Saturday,yesterday i was trying to start it but it was flooding badly.Today at work i was thinking about sticking the plugs in the oven when i got home,anyway got to the garage and managed to get 6 of the plugs out(turbo has to come of to get to 4&6) and they were dripping wet.Stuck them in front of the space heater for ten mins,stuck them back in and she roared in to life:)And she is running sweet as a nut,exhaust downpipe to fab up tmrw and test drive on.Oh and wind the actuator down seeing as its running the standard management,i think the Zytek was capable of around 7 psi of boost.Going to try around 4 or 5psi with the hot wire see how it goes/likes it.

Sweet, I would LOVE to have a go in a turbo RRC. Sounds awesome mate, get that video up sharpish! :D:)

Well Done! I sold my 1990 RRC 3.9 Janspeed single turbo (intercooled) last year, and she was so sweet ! See Video attached after new head gaskets fitted. You can hear the turbo whistle and wastegate chattering.

It pulled really hard from a start and would get to 100mph+ without thinking, but the handling wasn't up to driving at high speed.

Drove mine to Le Mans '08 in convoy with a TVR Griff and a 101 FC! It was loaded up with 4 adults, 4 bikes, and all our camping gear and still went like a train...Excellent fun. :D

Evening people,well its parked outside the Rangey.I have to weld the down-pipe on tmrw,will manage it on my lunchbreak am sure.I took it for a 2 mile spin out some country back roads(no houses or people to think there was thunder!) and yep what a difference 3 psi makes!4 up she was pulling hard,and what a noise:).One of the boys said it sounded like one of them v8 powerboats.lol,i will treat her to another 1psi tmrw also.Not sure if the hot wire air meter will fuel it ok at that psi.Shorts bursts of boost i suppose and luck.

I must have watched your vid on you-tube at least 50 times mister,that will be me at my work tmrw in the yard.I was set to bid on your one and lost out to the bin,(if it was yours?)so ended up getting the kit of the other one that was on at the same time.

I will get pics and a vid done for the w-end no worries,oh and the heat soak i think will be sorted with a wee vent in the side of the bonnet.Cheers for the replys peeps,Paul..

Thanks for your help with the terminology. Its the noise you get when you are 'on boost' and then suddenly back off the throttle, and the wastegate dumps excess pressure into the exhaust .

But I think it sounded great anyway - (unfortunately the sound quality you get from a mobile phone camera is limited).
 
This is the must have toy for this year.

I am going to sell my Green Peace membership card and invest in one of these.

Does anyone know if it will work with a carb engine - or am I missing something chuffing obvious.

While I asking silly questions, will it work with an Auto Gear box.

My engine is 3.5 Low Compression Carb fixed up to a ZF Gearbox. It's underpowered - would this help

sound on the video is fine you can hear the turbo spooling and whistling. when you come off the throttle the pressure has no where to go so goes back and hits the spinning compressor blades hence the noise. The wastegate is not on the compressor side but the exhaust side. Dump valves stop that from happening.
 
I wish I could afford to run a V8 let alone with turbo. Anyway the blocks make cool wine racks....

I have an idea how it works cos I had to rebuild it, but I reckon your terminology and explaination is great. Here's a couple of pics, you can see the valve in the centre of the exhaust manifold with the turbo removed

I am thinking of fitting a Janspeed turbo to my 3.9efi, what exactly is involved, other than fitting the turbo what else has to be done?
 
The Janspeed turbo conversion on the Rangey was pretty rare back in the 90's. You'll be lucky to find the parts now. To be honest, given the vast amount of work involved, you'd be much better off fitting a normally aspirated v8 with more displacement. For example; RPI do a 3.9 to 4.6 conversion. Keep all the injection, induction, cooling and exhaust systems standard and you'll save yourself loads of aggrovation.

There's no substitute for cubes!:D
 
Watching a janspeed turbo and manifolds on ebay at the moment, i contacted the seller and asked what else needs to be done to the engine when turbo is fitted, his answer was "nothing if you keep low boost pressure". Is this right, and if i have to run low boost........is it worth fitting?

It's a Landrover and It's made in a british car factory. Do you really think you can just bolt a turbo on it and that'll be it?? :eek: :rolleyes: :rolleyes:
