Evening gents i,m after some advice regarding a 3.5 V8.

Went and test drove a 90 today fitted with said engine and LPG conversion. Its got 170 on the clock and whilst on petrol drives fine. (RUNNING ON CARBS). However the garage selling the Defender has no paperwork at all with regards to servicing. My question is with this high mileage what remidial action should i take?

Apart from changing all filters and lubs, timming chain and possibly servicing the carburetors what else should i be thinking of?

The vehicle has been looked after with various repairs on the chassis and rear crossmember replaced. It has also had is viscous fan removed and replaced with double electric fans so the previous owner may have tackled some of these jobs......but before i go and possibly waste some more money what do you think?

cheers vinnie

Replacement of all fluids and filters first that's servicing , look a the brake pads they may or not require replacing, if there were probs with the running of the engine then it would be ignition parts to replace.
The rest is maintenance ie your timing chain, dampers, bushes and all the rest etc. wait till they give trouble unless your into preventive maintenance. :)

Thats the very one bencorkill.

She drove really well on petrol at least, bit spluttery on LPG but that was to be expected. All the vehicles electrics bar some of the dash worked fine. I had her running at idle for at least 40 minutes before driving and there was no evidence of leaks.

Think the previous owner may have bit of more than they could chew as there is a few bodge jobs.....front spot lamps have had their wires cut off and are now just for show!

As with any vehicle i use at work if i,m unsure i service her but the good old army have crazy servicing schedules so i,m used to the idea of carrying out a major service, engine at least

discool i,m all over this preventive maintenance stuff, but only as far as the cash allows..

So unless it all goes wrong in the first month i shouldn,t be looking at stripping the head down and changing any seals soon!

Other guy mentioned rot Just returned from test driving the V8 90. Whilst running on petrol the engine revs fine and has no smoke discharges:D. Just needed to warm her up first. That said she was a bit spluttery at low revs initialy.
Changed to LPG on the return leg, this time more spluttering and misfiring. Though the garage did say that the LPG needs setting up correct. Everything originall works fine, the cheap after market spots and rally lamps wiring have been cut out! The winch looks as much use as a chocalate fire guard. Underside has no visable rust spent more time today tapping and prodding around looking for rust.

However the l/h side bulk head has satreted to rot inside out directly next to the window pillar securing bolt:(....Hopefuly when i speak to the metal smiths in work tommorrow i,ll see if they,ll be willing to repair for me.

Or does anyone have a rough idea of the price to get the side of the bulk head repalced at a speacilist?

I,m still debating......

Buy it then start rebuilding it. Pretty simple really, there's no such thing as a good cheap defender :)

Have now turned the V8 down due to the condition of the bulkhead and the lack of history. For the money i would of spent getting it up to speed i can easily get a 90 wea either a 200tdi or 300tdi engine. Plus i can get parts for the 300 lump from work. Think i was looking at the V8 through rose tinted glasses!.....starting all over agin!

You wont live to regret it, plenty more fish in the sea, but just make sure you dont get a dogfish like that one haha:)

Your wallet wants a diesel but does your heart?

What you think, the roar of the V8 is awesome, but the filling up a petrol stations would make me and ma wallet cry....Diesel cheaper! to fill up and parts easier to get hold off.....heres hopping!

Not in my neck of the woods, diesel is the dearer fuel. :D

My mates just bought a v8 L322 on my recommendation, he just gong to stomach it, deal with it and enjoy it!!

V8s are verging on ridiculous lets be honest, but for me it's worth it just to have people snapping necks and giving thumbs up in car parks :D
