Hi
I posted a thread on here couple days ago say my v8 won't start manged to fire it up this morning after changing spark plugs, leads, dizzy cap and arm I ran it down the road sound bit rough but it all cleared and sound ok. Bought back home and tried to start it again and wouldn't start:mad:
I took spark plugs out they were very black and wet ie petrol I also took oil cap of and it was yello and smelt of petrol
Is there anyway of fixing this running rich problem thanks

It would have been better if you had posted this on your other thread. Anyway, I think it is safe to assume it is running very rich and there may have been some bore wash, so I suggest the first thing to do is unplug the ECU then remove all the spark plugs and turn it over a few times. Clean and dry your plugs. An oil and filter change would also be a good idea. Charge the battery.

Next check you have a healthy spark at the plugs. If you can, run a quick compression test. Next, I would be looking at temperature thermistor - check this with a multimeter, if the resistance is high the ECU will think it is cold and give full enrichment at starting. Thermistor will show something like 6kOhms at 0deg.C and 9kOhms at -10. Resistance at normal running temp should be something like 150 Ohms, if the resistance doesn't drop much or at all with increase in temperature you'll be needing a new temp. sensor. Don't confuse the thermistor with either the temp gauge sender or thermo switch for A/C fans.

Check the fuel thermistor as well - resistance values are the same.

Assuming the ignition system is O.K. mark the dizzy position and slacken off the clamp. Try and start it, if it doesn't want to go advance the timing a little and try again.

If thermistor value is high, take off the connector plug and short it with a paper clip, this will make the ECU think the engine is really hot and hopefully prevent full enrichment. Then try starting again. Once running get strobe on it and re-set timing to correct value.

There's not much to it really, it just sounds like a lot. BTW if you do oil and filter change make sure you get oil pressure after. Basically crank engine and see if oil light goes out - it should do after a few seconds, might have to crank it over two or three times though. If not you'll need to prime the oil pump which can be a bit of a PITA. Would also be useful if you put up your location.
