the ongoing saga of this engine..

it's been in the garage and had the ctas sut out, the dizzy rebuilt and the prop shaft repaired.. good news it's back on the road..

but it's still missing badly, really low on power across the rev range but especially at low revs and when cold.. grrr...

Course its gonna be low on power if the injun is missing! do ya know who stole it?

wots a "ctas sut out"

Sounds like a lean mixture whatever would be causing that depending on engine spec.
Is there a sensor on the exhaust? or was there one..

Ay up Tigger!! Thought you had it all sorted. You say you've got cats out? I can't remember if you have hotwire injection. If you do, have you changed the tune select resistor to non-cat??

Aha.. something simple Kev.. tell me that's a real switch not testbook and I'll owe you a great big beer..

It's a 3.9 efi serpentine belt.. has MAF and Lambda sensors all still in place.. runs rough on petrol or lpg. Lpg is single point. Garage said plugs were wet so suggested I did plugs and leads then see what's what.. in terms of checking timing they say the static timing is as good as they can get it while it's missing..

Oh and another thing.. now the battery is dead.. was fully charged by the garage and been used for a couple of days then battery dead. Now I know the serp belt needs changing and the rev counter doesn't always show anything so I guess the belt couls be badly slipping.. could that have any impact on ignition timing?

Yes I know.. a mess.. but this engine has cost me the best part of a grand since the heads went and simple things like belts are being left till it's running right.. but of course if the belt can stop it running right then so be it..

I'm out of cash again this month so feel free to post ideas for wasting more money next month..

I reckon Fett could tell you a thing or three about rough running 3.9's.:)

And I would be placing me money on the Altnator crapped itself why battery is draining and taco not working.

Well alternator just gets added to the list of things I need to buy.. thing is I'm at the point of feeling like I'm throwing good money after bad and would like to feel more confident that it will work before I do any more.. so then alternator, plugs, leads.. that's the best part of £200 again.. worth every penny if it gives me my motor back but a heartbreaker if it doesn't..

May not be anything wrong with your plug leads, they is just very very particular about being too close to one and other, look up manual for the correct positioning/routing and put them exactly as shown and make sure they is not touching anything to earth out on and see if it make a difference, best to take a look under bonnet in a very dark place while engine is running, best also done when engine is cold, if any leakage out of wires, you'll see sparks jumping.

Exchange alternator shouldn't set you back too many £. and will last just as long as new one.

I kept checking on ebay and found a second hand alternator for £20 which I could collect. A bit of patience and ebay can be a blessing. :)

serp engine don't do slipping drive belt so alt fubar!
use only gen cap leads and rotor!
rtc6551 lead set
stc1857 rotor arm
stc8368 cap
80-90 quid but they do last 2 years!
timing should be 5 degress btdc at idle with vac unit disconnected on a warm engine
