How do brothers in arms,

well I've decided to take the plunge and go all LPG.

Trouble is where in London will do it, and how much please?

Your input will be most welcome as I hope it'll save me a few quid....

Cheers

Call Derek Allfrey Landrovers in Billingshurst he will do it for you - has been doing it, believe it or not since 1975!

He has just wound up his old company, Sussex Autogas, as there are too many people doing it to make it worthwhile stocking systems etc and most of his V8 landrover customers are now all converted - when they get new cars he just swaps everything over to the new vehicle.

He does single-point for the old-style carbs and hotwire injection systems and multi-point for gems/mems etc and all the modern stuff.

The best thing is that he is not VAT registered so you save 20% straight away

Give him a call 07793 238964

He did my 3.9 discovery and it was a great job.

Thanks Griffman! Appreciate this - will give him a call after Tuesday - have me 40th to contend with until then ;) Cheers

I got a 110 f reg 1989 with a factory fitted engine with edelbock carb. Please tell me more! I am not much of a mechanic so as much basic knowledge as poss please!

you will need a single-point system.

Mr Zen has a lot of knowledge and often boasts on here about how easy it is to do this and that - which is fine if you have his levels of expertise and the tools to do the job.

however as far as lpg goes, if you don't want any issues, or to blow up, get it done professionally.

Your insurance company will insist on a compliance certificate in any case.

This is all very useful information, I'm most grateful.

I know that you have to get a yearly service/certificate to make it all legal. would I have to go back to him every year? Or could a more local place service it?

What kind of price did you pay all in?

Any approved lpg place can service it - every two years is ok if you are doing reasonable miles.

I think Derek charges about 1500 all-in for a single-point system with a little more for under-slung chassis tanks.

He will drop you back at Billingshurst station (direct train to Victoria or Clapham Junction) when you drop the car off and collect you from there when it is ready.

Give him a call - he speaks fluent Land Rover and he doesn't bite.

Griffman, your a diamond, thankyou.

Without getting too in depth here, if the engine were to die, could the system be "unbolted" and re fitted to a new lump????

Reason why i ask this is i really dont know the history of my old girl (whoever knows the history of their old girls?) although in the year we've been together, alls been well (i uploaded a pic when i put a unique body on - please tap in "rare beast" to see the pic if ur curious.)

Its 1989, and on 120,000. As i stated, i'm not much of mechanic - just like driving it! What generally could a v8 get too mileage wise?

Its just weighing up whether an older engine is worth the trouble expense if its to die at 150k - but if the system could go onto a new engine, then defo! Which begs another question - what kind of costs roughly could a new engine accrue..... Sorry im asking alot here!

Thanks in advance!

I've done a multipoint system on an Omega before. Cost 900 quid all in including cert. However I got a few issues getting it tested, some places just told me to **** off. If you get a copy of COP11 which is the standard the kit should be fitted to your see most of it is straight forward common sense, however having said that mine failed the test the first time. When I was looking to get one fitted i was getting quoted 1500 quidish. I was told it takes around 25 hours to fit and I am pretty good with the spanners and it took me 40-50 hours that's evening/weekends. As yours is a carby you don't have to worry to much about the computer side. I had to map mine to run on gas. If the car is healthy there's no reason why putting it on LPG will kill it but be aware for some reason LPG is harder on the ignition system so new plugs, leads etc. You can transfer from one car to another but it will need a recert. Tanks are lifed for 10 years so if you buy second hand kit check the tank date. If you can swing the spanners ok you can do it yourself but it's not one of the jobs I'd look forward to doing again.

Firstly the systems are fully transferable

Second - a 3.5 on carbs will do well over 200000 miles - no porous block to worry about.

You may need a camshaft and new lifters at some point but this is very easy to replace and they cost less than 100 pounds and about 4 hours labour.

IF your engine were to die Derek has about fifty decent V8s lying around.
