Hi All,

as you may know, I'm some way into my project to rebuild an old 300tdi 110 as a shiny new JED 4.6 V8 110.

At some point in the near future (just after new year perhaps) I'll have to think about buying & fitting a fuel tank & associated gubbins. I've never done any fuel-system changed before, so I'm pretty green on the subject.

What are my options when it comes to choosing a fuel tank? keep the 300tdi one from the donor and clean it out? Buy a new one for an original 3.5V8 defender? a TD5 tank?

I've not really got the first clue about lift pumps and senders and all that... education will be forthcoming, I;m sure :)

Probably also wort mentioning that this isn't overland exped beast, so I don't need 1000 miles of range... 300+ would be nice though!

Any insights, much appreciatted.

Not very familiar with that engine, but at a guess it will need an in tank fuel pump. If that is the case, you will need a tank that can accept that, which I think would rule out Tdi tank or carburetted v8 tank

That makes sense... though I wouldn't have known that tdi tanks don't have an in-tank pump tbh... learning, learning!

Perhaps it'll end up that I need a V8i tank as per Disco (1 or 2?). Never sure about compability between disco and defender though.

I would think a second hand V8 D2 tank would be an economic option. You might have to make up some new brackets to mount it between rear chassis legs of your 110. Worth putting a tape measure over a tank if you know someone with a D2.

You can use an external pump but it needs to be mounted below fuel level. Bosch 0580464070. Don't get a Bosch 044, it is overkill for your application and you'll hear it humming with engine idling.

Thanks for that info cooltide.

I assume by 'external pump' we mean it can be mounted anyway as long as it's horizontally below fuel level? Is that right? Does that mean I can use any defender tank that fits?

I really am at first principles with this one.

Thanks

Adam

you can use one of these in top hole on std 110 tank prc8318, you may need to extent it or not i cant remember
EFI%20FUEL%20PUMP%20PRC8318

Oooo, that's some sort of after market iin-tank pump is it?

By 'standard 110 tank' do you mean the 3.5 v8 110 tank? I will look up the part number later but I'm viewing on my phone at the moment.

no its a rrc pump before they went to plastic tanks, std tank as in the normal steel tank fitted to 110

Oh I see, just 1 steel tank type across the range of engines... Ok that's bloomin perfect... A bit of electrickery to work out no doubt, but sure it's that bad.

Thanks that man!

on top of tank is a round plate with return hose ,you remove that and fit pump and use pipe on the sender unit as a return instead of a feed

And the sender unit that rrc pump yeah? I wasn't sure if a sender and a fuel pump were the same thing or not.

I can only apologise for the basic level of my knowledge here..

That's exactly what I've done. Standard two hole 90 side mount tank and a rrc fuel pump extended in length with a bit of plate. I changed the return to a petrol one also. Don't forget you need high pressure fuel lines too.

sorry for the thread ressurection. Just wondering if anyone knows the right part number for the sender for the above set up? I can find prc8463 and STC1482 listed in relation to diesel tanks. I know there is a difference in the 2 wire, or 3 wire versions. obviously I'd be after the 3 wire to get the low fuel level light working.

Can anyone verify the correct 3 wire send unit for tank wfe000190 for us with petrol?

EDIT: AMR1495 also comes up in searches, but again, in reference to diesel.
