Hi folks, I have been around a while now on my third range rover, I know glutton for punishment! but I have never had any serious issues before. I have a rattle on start up from my range rover l322 04 reg with 83k on the clock been running on gas since late 04, I would guess cam chain tensioner? runs very quiet after first couple of seconds, any body got any ideas? if so can anyone recommend someone who can sort it within a reasonable distance to me [Evesham, worc.] Thanks Geoff.

Sounds like the VANOS. Not cheap if paying someone else to do it.
Thanks for that, but pardon my ignorance what is vanos and what does it do and what is involved with the repair? the rattle is only now and then not everytime you start up.

Geoff.

Variable Nockenwellensteuerung

Variable valve timing.

I'd look at oil levels in the engine, if it is a bit low the oil pump may need a bit more time to get oil pressure up and quieten everything down.

You can also get one hydraulic valve lifter that is under pressure (up on the cam) when the engine stops, and the oil leaks out of the lifter overnight. Next morning it will rattle until the oil fills it up again. My Discovery V8 does that on one lifter.

Thanks for the info, I don't think its anything to do with the vanos as it is only on start up and then only now and then, once it has fired up after a second it is very quiet with no noise at all when its running. So maybe as you say a valve lifter, plenty of oil according to the dipstick. I thought it might be cam chain tensioner? I don't know how reliable they are on this engine?
