How much should a replacement engine be? Mate picked one up and it needs a new engine. I'm sure it'll be a wide range depending on state and history etc.

It depends on where in the world it is. In the UK, a reasonable, second hand engine can be found for about £500 + fitting. Be warned, fitting is a time consuming job.
