hi,

i am looking to upgrade my freelander 1, 2005, stereo from the original to a double din stereo with sat nav etc.

Do I need to purchase a fitting kit aswell as the stereo? any advice would be appreciated on what type if needed.

I have a couple of stereos in mind but if anyone can recommend one that would be great

Thanks in advance.

Nick

Not a bad move, as the standard stereo is pretty basic by modern standards.

Yes you need a trim adaptor, as the factory stereo isn't a standard double din size. These are available from a number of places, including Ebay. You'll also need a harness adaptor, again available from many places.

I've been looking at the Atoto A6 for the wife's Fiat 500. It has some reasonable reviews, and doe's loads of stuff for under £200.

For the cage/facia you need this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161106008764

If you are not interested in steering wheel controls: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/292405933861

If you want steering wheel controls you will need this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/350864072134 and this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371377340648
Or you can get a specific lead (small one) for a fiver depending on what you are putting in.

But that is if you have the normal visteon, if you have the Becker/Harman Kardon single din unit it's different cabling.
Put a picture what you currently have and will update prerequisites.

Thanks for the advice, not sure what make the stereo is but the photo is attached, any further advice is appreciated, cheers

Plus an radio connector adapter: http://ebay.co.uk/itm/250413926808

That is all you need plus a double din unit. Cheap androids have poor sound quality, unless you get a DSP one.
I've had best results with Pioneer FH-X730BT

I changed mine a few years ago. Was originally fitted with the Navigational System CD player which was single din and changed it to a double din.
The Haynes manual does tell you how to remove the console to change the stereo but it if you do it by the book, it will be one hell of a struggle to do so as the rear section overlaps the front where the gear stick is. Best thing to do is remove the rear section (the one around the hand brake) and that will make it a lot easier to remove the front section.
Once that's off, changing the cage is a doddle. Take out the old stereo first, swap the fascia adaptors and swap the old cage for new one. Ended up having to fettle out the locating holes on the fascia adaptor I had so watch out for that with yours.
