M reg Disco 300tdi

1st Disco.

I've read the sticky.

When I bought this Disco it had ( still has ) white steel modular 16/7 wheels.

Tyres ... front ... 2 x ... Colway C_TRAX MT 265 / 75 / 16

back was ... 2 x ... GreenWAY BIG MACHO HARDRIDER 265 / 75 /16 M+S

As I say I've read the sticky ... but as far as I can see there are no cut aways or alterations on the panels and the suspension looks standard with no rises.

The spare is a KUMHO POWERGUARD AT 245 / 75 / 16

This morning it all went t!ts up. Took the wife work at 7am and it felt dreadful. Checked over car on her works car park and the rear nearside was virtually flat. So I changed that for the spare. Drove about 7 miles and parked up. Noticed rear offside was virtually flat. Oh bugger ... no more spare! I knew there were tyre places about a mile or so away. So I have to risk it. I get about half a mile and it's flat so I pull into a Mitsubishi dealers.

Guy in there was helpful and we put the original rear nearside on the rear offside as the rear offside tyre is now goosed ( it was badly cracked before it went flat and needed replacing as did the other BIG MACHO ). He inflates this tyre but you can hear it hissing. I set off to try and make it to tyre place down the road. I get to tyre place and have to wait an hour for them to open. They don't have anything in that size but tell me to try another place nearby and they re inflate tyre as it's now flat again. So I get to this other place ...

They also don't have anything in this size but he does say he has a used tyre @ £25 that will be fine and will be ok for me to get home and to call in and try other places on the way. So he fits a used NANKANG SPORTREX 235 / 70 / 16 106T M+S

I believe this is the standard size tyre.

On the way home I call in a few places and only 1 place has one suitable used tyre which is 265 / 75 / 16 ... but I need 2 as both rears have gone . He says he can get me 2 in tomorrow at 20 quid each.

However ...

Do I put 2 x 265 / 75 / 16 on the back so I'm that size all around?

Or do I fit 1 x 235 / 70 / 16 on rear ( to match the NANKANG fitted today ) and then match up to those when I change the fronts?

Or replace other 3 to 235 / 70 / 16?

The fronts have probably 5mm left on them ( 265 / 75 /16 ).

I don't do any off roading at the moment but love to have a go. I do do a lot of driving on turf but I'd imagine any Disco would cope. I also do a bit of driving on beaches but again my old cars would cope so any Disco will.

What do you think?

Cheers

buy 4 good new ones dount mess with crap just cost you more in the long run
^^^^^^^^^^^ wot he said ^^^^^^^^^^^^

is it worth risking your life to save a few quid on tyres? coz you sure ain't gonna get anything roadworthy for 20 quid.

Guys

Appreciate you taking the time to post but I've been running cars on the cheap for donkey's and buying 4 new tyres is not an option. You may actually be amazed at what you can get tyre wise for 20 quid.

Scrappers are full of cars that have been written off or failed MOTs and have brand new tyres on them. I've bought tyres for a tenner from a scrappers that are brand new and well known makes.

Try not to worry about the price ... any comments re the sizes please.

Many thanks

fair enough,

stick to the same size all round.

If the fronts are the same size as the 2 he can get for £20 each then do that. If at some later stage you can afford it, get some good ones as the boys suggest but i appreciate thats tough atm.

Thanks gents

So I'll get 2 x 265 / 75 / 16 to match the fronts.

I just wondered if there was some disadvantage/advantage to having the original sized 235 / 70 / 16's .... maybe fuel economy? I read the other link that says the speedo will be out by about 9%.

( obviously not desperately worried about fuel economy otherwise I wouldn't have got a Disco and I don't do many miles )

Storm:confused:

is that you

you feeling ok

Most speedo's can be out by up to 10% anyway. I know this due to laser testing.... But, personally I agree with the others, same size all around at the cheapest otherwise handling could become an issue.... Otherwise it will be fine until you have to brake at 50mph on a bend in the wet... As happened to me.

Cheers guys

I know what you mean about the speedo. That site says at 30 on the speedo I will be doing about 32 with these tyres ... yet when I go past these speed signs and my speedo is saying 30 they say I'm doing 28.

Ironically, those "Calibrated" Laser speed signs are not always right either... I have tested those too and found those can be out of tune so to speak.. But I think that it could be down to varying differences like angles, slip, moisture, etc etc... So much for accurate calibration!!! I think it would be easier if all our speedo's were based on a GPS reading, then we would all know for sure what our speed really is! It's sad I know, but I do watch you tube in giggles when you see the blackbird owners doing 180mph and they get all excited thinking they are the fastest things on the planet when really, they are more like 130mph.. I know this too, because my bird is horrifically out!!! It reads 100mph at 70mph!!!! LOL... That's my excuse anyway "your honour"!
