I'm confused.
I have a 1986 90, with a 200TDI engine. I'm currently running on standard LR white steel rims (not wolfs) , with 7.50 R16 tyres, and a duff tubed spare.
I'm looking to upgrade to something that looks good and offers good value (grabber AT's???), but I'm a little confused on sizes and rims. I'm 95% on the road, so mud tyres are no use at the moment.
I know the difference between steel rims and alloy, but whats a modular?
I understand 235/85 R16 should fit directly on my current rims, but i'm seeing lots of deals with rims and tyres together.. and I'm tempted as my rims are rusty. I'd like to go fatter? but do I need to consider spacers lift kits etc? I'm not planning to lift my landy, just want something that looks good, drives well and is not too extreme.
Cheers for any pointers

MR GOOGLE has the answers send him a pm

I wish he did, but most tyre companies are selling tyres, and possibly rims, but they will sell me what I want, and the problem is I don't know what I want hence the post. I've also gone through 4 separate landy magazines, and 2 Haynes manuals, and most of the defender workshop manual downloaded from that very helpful mr google. I've also searched the forum, here and others so I know all the variations, hence my reference to grabber ATs but I still haven't found a thickies guide to buying tyres and rims.

Thanks

W

I recently had the same dilema (search for my threads if you're interested).

In the end I opted for 235/85R16 BF Goodrich All Terrains with rims. I found them cheapest on Craddocks, fitted balanced and delivered. The other deals I found wasn't so good when I actually worked it all out. (dont forget to add VAT)

When you price up just the tyres (to fit to your current rims) dont forget to factor in the cost to get someone to fit and balance them for you. The local places to me wanted £10 a wheel to fit. So it turned out that per wheel it wasn't much more to get new rims as well (plus they look much better).

You dont need spacers. The consideration here is how much you compromise on the turning circle with the slighly wider tyres. I.e. you should adjust the steering stop thingys so that your tyres dont hit the radius arms.

I found them really not much different to before (used to have 205/85).

They are about 10% bigger circumference though. So you go faster than before, for any given speed on your speedo.
