2 rears starting to shows signs of cracks. Currently on Bridgestone Duellers on Disco 1 steel wheels on a S3 SWB with a P6 V8 and 3.5 RR diffs. Tyres are 245/70/16 but would like bigger profile to fill out the arches better. Was going to go down to 235 with an 80 profile but 85 seems to be more popular. Current diameter is 29.49 inches but going to 235/85 ups that to 31.73 which seems to much. Looking at the truck an inch bigger would be good but 2" seems too big. Anyone got any pics of a 235/85/16 and does it cause any issues. Not worried about the speedo as it reads 43 when i'm doing 60 now so it needs calibrating anyway.

I would say clearance issues are likely to be related to stiffness and position of rusty old springs / boingy parabollics

Probably best to make some rough measurements and calculations with use of one of those many tyre calculators on the interweb and compare the diameters and widths with what you've got.

Thats where I got the diameters from. I'm probably going to get a 2nd hand 235/85 to put against the arch for comparison. I've oiled all the springs - well, as best I can.

What's wrong with 7.50x16s? Original tyres on a LWB series.

Looks better, thanks. I've got the same roof rack and just bought a maltese grill to fit, and got an old AA badge. Decision made now. Can you see over the spare on the bonnet as going canvas and will be going with the spare on the bonnet..

Nothing but I have Disco 1 steel wheels already. Got over 40 TVR wheels so don't really need any more spares.

AFAIK, 7.50x16 will fit on D1 steels. They do on Ninety rims, which I think are the same.

Know what you mean about the spares, though, I used to have over fifty tyres myself, including about a dozen spares. Got my habit a bit more manageable now, though! :D

i had bridgesetone duelers on my years ago and they did not last long at all maybe 12 months if i was lucky, but i have been using a MRF tyre $235 each here in australia and so far i have 3 years on the rear and 5 on the front as the front wears quicker so i get new ones place them on the rear and move the rears forward and that way i get at least 5 on a tyre.
View attachment 128968 MRF Super Traction LT 7.50x16 non radial. Indian made.

Not seen any crossplys in a long time. I doubt if those would be suitable for UK road use.

i have never used a radial on my landrover, well the only time was the bridgestone duelers and they were second hand, so i would not know how it would handle the road with radials.
people have told me the drive would be much better but i think the steel belt would make it rougher on roads as it has not as much flex so thats why i have never looked at radials, and the radials can be quite dear in this country.

I am not sure if crossplys are illegal in the UK, but the reduced braking grip and cornering might make them awkward on congested UK roads.

You are right, the people who are telling you that are wrong. Crossplys do give a better ride on a landrover, due to the fact that they grip the road less and have softer sidewalls. I have used both, but not had crossplys since about 1988, as far as I can remember.

Still legal as far as I'm aware so long as not mixed on an axle with a radial.

Interesting. I would look at getting them again, if I wanted tyres for off road and short slow on road trips.
I would guess they are expensive now, due to limited demand.
Fortunately, I rarely have to drive landrovers now, and have enough tyres and wheels to last me for life! :)

Looking at General Grabbers but are the 235/85/16 really 828mm diameter? The tyre calculators are around 806mm.

That would be really tight in the rear arch. What the difference between AT and AT2? Seem to be different AT's also so its very confusing - not sure if there are old stock and that's why they are cheaper but no point buying a tyre that's already 2 years old..
