the time has come to replace my tyres on my classic, and was wondering whats the biggest tyre you can get on the standard rim, just want to beef them up a bit as personally i feel the 205 looks a little under sized, any input on experiences with various sizes and makes would be appreciated.

well i've got the size sorted now, 235/70/16, but now for the make, anyone with any experience of bf goodrich at's? or has anyone tried the new insa turbo remoulds? or heard anything about either?

on another matter has anyone carried out a 2" lift on a classic and what problems did you experience? e.g. brake lines to short, poor road handling.

any input as ever appreciated

matt

I'm refering to a 2" suspension lift, i'm faced with some what of a dilema, my standard suspension is done, so do i spend circa £100 for standard kit or go for circa £200 for the lift kit bearing in mind i want to get into the off roading now i've had my first few goes.

No problem fitting 245/75x16. You may encounter slighty rubbing between tires and fenders during large axle articulation. I have heavy duty springs on my -84 RR, with maybe 1-2" lift. No problem with brake hoses either.

I have currentl fitted 235/85x16 on series III rims. That works fine also. You will probably need to adjust the end stops on the steering to prevent rubbing on the radius arms.

The Insa remoulds are great......have i been told by a friend who just bought them. They make a lot of noise on paved roads though.

Nowt wrong with Insa or Broncos range for that matter. If you can live with the road noise that is. BFG are a tremendous tyre however, it's a lot of money if you wreck one off road. Bearing in mind that we all have different budgets.

The BFG AT are useless for off-road. I have used these tires myself. Works ok in dry conditions, but when it is a bit muddy they just fills the threads. It like driving on slicks. To bad BFG stopped producing the Trac Edge, they were just great. I still have a set of them on the Series III rims. Tested them a couple of months ago in a sandpit, and compared to the AT's they were much better.

If you are looking for road tires the AT are ok.

Maybe the wrong word to use. I meant sandpit as in a large pit were huge machines dig out sand, not childrens playground. :) Maybe my dictionary didn't have the best choice of words. :)

has anyone any experience or know of someone who's fitted silly size tyres to a classic? talking 33" tyres here, I know its a stupid idea but someone must have been mad enough to try it!!

i know a lad that has 33's on his classic but he has a 4"lift kit and all the gubbins that go with it ;)

I've always wanted to do something daft like that, I mean who as a 5 year old didn't want a bigfoot for themselves!! I would imagine your mate has had to do some severe bodywork mods to avoid rubber/body contact on full articulation. I've got a 2" lift kit on mine and was toying with a body lift but not sure whether the lift needs to be in the suspension only or 50/50 to get those 33's comfy? also do you know if there 12.5's or 10.5's.
