I know that it is desirable to fit new tyres four at a time however my 3 door has fairly newish tyres on the back and older tyres on the front, this was the case when I bought it last year. I have managed 10 000 miles since March last year the front now look like they are close to needing replaced. Is there any critieria for putting on only two tyres, i.e. front only or rear only? Meaning I put rear tyres on front and new ones on back?

Sorry if this has been recorded elswhere.

have the tyre shop put new ones on the front rims then swap them to the rear, so your new tyres are on the rear.

There's lots written on this subject, something to be aware of though is different makes of tyres can sometimes be of slightly different sizes and therefore different circumferences, the largest needs to go on the rear.
I'm changing my fronts later this week with the same make as the nearly new rears but new will be going on the back just to be safe!

i was assuming he would be fitting like for like, you make a good point.

it is, indeed, the largest rolling circumference that needs to be on the rear

if it were me i would be trying to get the same make as on the back so you know you got the same sizes and the newer ones on the back

Beware , tollerance of only 5mm , between front and rear tyres any more and you will cook your VCU

Thanks guys was much as I expected the rears are Nationwide Bravarius winter tyres guess I'll have to move them to the front and get another set of same.
