Hi folks,
The recent weather claimed one of my tyres (OSR).
It is a 255 x 55 x R18 109H Pirelli Scorpion S/T.
I suspect the tyres on the car may be the originals but with only 13K on the clock the tread on all 4 was perfect. Now I am faced with a dilemma, a new same-type tyre is £175 + fitting.
Given that I didn't hit anything and the reason for the flat and tyre destruction are a mystery I am concerned that the tyres are all 17 years old and possibly although unworn "tread-wise" are falling apart inside???
So, do I replace with an expensive tyre to match the remaining 3 or scrap the lot and replace with a more affordable tyre to keep the costs down and benefit from more modern tyre brands and just keep one (the best one) as a spare?

I would be interested to get your views, cos I am no expert on tyre decay/longevity etc.
I know I don't need them all to be the exact same make as on a hippo, but that's about it.
Thanks in advance.

I had a 14 year old but low mileage rear tyre fall apart at around 80mph which put the car in a spin which there was nothing I could do about. Replaced the wheel with the new and unused spare that went bang in less than 100 miles.
I then replace all five tyres. The tyres are still on the car after 27 years of very low mileage as the car tucked up in the garage for most of the year, but then as I know the tyres are on borrowed time I check them and keep my speed down.
So I would say replace all five of your tyres.

Don't fink u can get them Pirelli st any more I've just put on Pirelli zeros see what there lik but don't use the car all week only wkends

Probley get them cheaper I've u doin 4

Thanks everyone.
The truth is that I am a low-mileage driver (<2,000 P.A) running on a pension income nowadays and the Nexen tyres at £338 for 4, as shown to me by @biketeacherdave (thanks mate!) seem just the ticket for my needs.
Ordered them just now and will get a mobile fitter to put them on when they have been delivered.

If you want to know how old your tyres are check the DOT number on the sidewall
this will tell you what week & year the tyres were manufactured.

ie DOT 2709 = 27th week 2009

Cheers Kev

Will take a good look tomorrow. One of the fronts has annular cracks in the side-wall all the way round. I wouldn't think that's a particularly healthy sign, it looks like the rubber is perished somewhat.
Goodness, I've been doing 70 on these. :(
Can't see any DOT marking by torch...@kevstar .... will take a look tomorrow.
I suspect I have a mix of Pirelli Scorpions on here.... ST's M&S's.

Scorpion STs were on mine originally. Nexen Roadians were good but did wear quite quickly. They weren't so good in the snow either.

I got General Grabber AT2s fitted for £110 a corner from my local tyre place.

I have been running the nexan hp about to get an other set love them and a good price I pay £320 a set fitted, you will like them:)

I've got nexens winguard suv's on mine and they're great.
Slightly down on mpg but quiet and great grip in wet, cold and snow.
I'd happily buy nexens again

Just as an update.....
I went out and took down all the DOT numbers off the road wheels.
No wonder the ruddy tyre just "failed"......... The tyres are pre 2000.
e.g. codes....<498>, <799> Arghh. I take it as a sign from the almighty that the recent failure was a tap on the shoulder to draw my attention to this.

Tyres tend to last 5 years before they start to degrade. 18 years is just dangerous. ;)
So I see. Wonder why the dealer "dressed them" to look like new and told me he had put new Scorpions on because "they just look right".
Answer: All Car salesmen tell fairy-stories. Mostly based on what they think will help make the sale.

That is unbelievable how somebody in the trade could do that and knowing that the tyres were of an old age would sell them on.... unbelievable, fûcking unbelievable:mad:
