Hi Guyz

I have just bought a set of 17" alloys for my 2001 TD4 FL and need to put some rubber on them, currently the FL has 15" rims on with 195-80-15 Wanglers..
I use the FL off road a little and was thinking of the Pireilli Scorpions, but unsure what size tyres to fit... eg. 235-65-17.

any advice on tyre makes or sizes to use will be much welcomed

I’ve got Michelin 4x4 215/65R16 XPC on my Freelander. These were standard fit by LR, for Japanese markets, where we got it from. Tread pic below.

When having an alignment + geometry set-up done at the main dealers, I was advised the more radial patterns will produce less road noise. Mine produce a lot. The lad doing the set-up drove my car and compared it to all the others they drive daily. He said it had a lot more grip, and more road noise due to the tread pattern. Said he could feel the steering wanted to move back to the straight-ahead position, with more force felt from the tyres. He advised this tread pattern was about the limit he would recommend, due to the stress on the transmission and the way the traction control works on Freelanders, for both on/off road use.

My tyres work well off road.

dont forget it will knock your speedo out a bit 15" to 17" wheels.

All depends on the final rolling radius.

A 15" wheel with 80 series rubber on will be within millimeters rolling radius to a 17" with the correct low profile rubber on.........

Hi, I have 17" alloys on my 02 TD4, which was fitted with 225 55 17 Pirelli Scorpion ST as standard. I replaced one front with an STR (as ST is no longer available) with the new spare on the other, and the tyre life of the STR was not as good. I have gone over to Michelin Synchrones (which replaced the Pirelli as original fitting), but these have now been superceded by Michelin Latitude. My off road use was limited to towing a caravan over wet and muddy fields, which was no problem.

We run 225/55/17 Yokahama Geolander ST/S . The car is not used for serious off roading although is used on farm tracks + fields etc. The grip and on road performance is very good with a low road noise .
I removed a set of Pirelli Scorpions which were less than 1/2 worn after suffering excessive road noise which upon removal was found to be all 4 tyres breaking up inside leaving a huge amount of black rubber debris floating about . Never seen anything like it before and wouldn't put Scorpions on again.
I think I've seen a LR bulletin about deflation problems with factory fitted 17 " alloys and Pirelli Scorpions .

The 235/65/17 tyres will foul the coil over shock as the overall diameter of this tyre is approx 6cm taller, and 1cm wider than the standard 225/55/17 fitment by Landrover.
Basically you will need to stick to the standard 225/55/17 fitment, unless you fit wheel spacers, and depending on th etyre size you opt for, a suspension lift.

Is this true? Mine has 235/65/18's on it. It came with 235/60/18's (Sport model if that makes any difference) as standard and was advised that going to 65 from 60 was fine - I've had no problems (I think) with the shock coil. (Although I do have uneven tyre wear on the front left I'm assuming this is more to do with tracking since no other wheel is affected.

Probably find that the offset on your rim is different from the 17 to take these things into account. A greater offset has the same effect as adding wheel spacers. Not sure without looking- might even have different shocks. Have offered up the 235/65/17 on mine and they dont fit.
Is it a FL1 or 2? 'cos that also makes a difference.

It's an FL1 - sport model 18" wheels as standard - you could be right about the offset.
