Hi Guys,

New to this forum so hello to you all!
Recently purchased a 2000 reg. Freelander 1 TD4.

I need to fit a towbar with twin electrics to tow my caravan.
However, i am struggling to information on how to wire in the 12s grey socket, this is the one that charges the caravan battery and serves the fridge.
I've spoken with a towbar supplier and they said if i purchased a vehicle dedicated wiring kit i could simply plug the wires into the car.
is this the case? or would i still need to cut/splice wires etc?
Any website links, photos etc would be useful.

Thank you!

Been a long time since I messed with the towing wiring. If you already have the black electrics on, then the 7 way bypass is in the boot behind the left hand plastic panel. A standard kit should wire straight in.

Hi Mike,
i currently have no towbar or electrics fitted.
Is the 7 way bypass required for the grey 12s electrics?

Yes you'll need a bypass. Unless you take the panel off and there's already one fitted. A standard towbar kit to fit the Freelander is readily available and should come with all the bits included.
@Nodge68 just fitted one, he should be along in a bit to give you more up to date information.

12N trailer lighting power is provided. There's a socket behind the offside boot trim panel for a dedicated wiring kit to plug into.
12S wiring isn't provided for on the Freelander 1 so this will need to be added. Off hand, I can't think of a suitable feed from another circuit that could be tapped into.
I hope your tow bar fits better than mine did as I had a nightmare.

So i would assume that there's no real benefit getting a dedicated/specific wiring kit?
It's just when i spoke to PF Jones (towbar specialists) they said if i opted for the dedicated wiring kit, the 12s socket should "plug straight in" opposed to a universal wiring kit which would require tapping into wires on the car.

Yes, that's reminded me. Ran a dedicated wire from the battery through the car with an in-line fuse, 15A if I remember rightly. For the 12s.

12N is there and should plug straight in.
12S can't plug straight in as there's no socket provided in the FL1. The FL2 and D3 have both prewired but not the FL1. You'll need to run 1 or even 2 cables if a relay is used, to give 12S power.
