Hi all,
Trying to sort a number of niggles out with the defender today, and something that's been bugging me for a long time is with my CD player.

It's an aftermarket Sony CD player, and a relatively old one, so it doesn't have an aux in for playing my ipod music.

I've bough a twin aux cable from maplin:

I've plugged the red and white jacks into the back of the cd player but when I plug the aux into my ipod and play music, the sound only comes out of the rear 2 speakers and not the front ones. This makes it far too quiet to comfortably listen to when going above 30mph. Is this something I have to live with, or have I done something wrong?

OK, WHICH Sony CD player and what are sockets have you connected the plugs to labelled as? I'm guessing it's because it doesn't have an aux in so heaven knows what you've plugged it in to.

Not sure of the exact model of the cd player, as it came with the landy. On the rear of the cd player were two connectors of identical size. One white, and one red, which I plugged the twin aux cable into. Red into red, and white into white.

I got the idea from another forum, and various youtube videos, which give this as a way of playing music via an aux input, without the expense of a new stereo.

The downside of this, is that it effectively plays OVER the noise of the radio, so it is necessary to turn the volume of the radio right down, and then the volume of the aux music is controlled by the device playing it.

A bit Heath Robinson, but it's cheap and seems to do the job. I just don't understand why it only plays through only 2 speakers. Specifically only the rear ones?????

I think it's because those outputs are internally linked on your stereos rear output as they're intended for connecting to an amp/subwoofer which you would have in the rear. My Kenwood did something similar and I could reconfigure its settings in the menu.

Cheers mate. I'll see if I can change it in by fiddling with the settings tomorrow. If not, ebay for a second hand head unit with an aux input I reckon.

Well, I posted the question here, and on an in car entertainment forum, and I havn't been able to get an answer, so I thought sod it and bought a sony head with cd, aux in, and usb from halfrauds. Hopefully the unit is just a straight swap, and I've got my fingers crossed it will improve the sound quality atleast a little bit because with the old sony cd player, the sound quality is pretty awful (probably due to the 1992 landy speakers though! lol)

Cheers for your responses.

I went for the Alpine Bluetooth radio/CD set with Vibe speakers both Halfords. Get Bluetooth phone conn plus IPod play through via front connector. Vibe speakers got good write up on forums and still only 4ins so straight replace (2000my Def 90)
Fitting easy BUT need to get behind the switch/radio wiring to find the Original DIN connectors, that was a pain!

You did get an answer. The sockets on the rear are for an Amp/Sub.
