Mr Noisy

Coming in your ears.
Hello fellow V8 friends.

So, id like to try to twin alternator my 3.5, to increase my output on tickover more than anything i think.

I have a 3.5 Disco with mulitbelt from cover.

I know glyn lewis does a bracket for the serpentine engine, and i could look at fitting a serpentine front end to my engine when i eventually strip it down for a new cam (at some point in the future)

however, if i could sort something in the meantime it would be nice.

I notice the water pump has a V spare which must be for the aircon pump fitted to some models. what i cannot guess is where or how the aircon pump would mount, what the belt arrangement is etc etc.

i was just hoping someoe might be able to cast some insight or betterstill provide some pictures of the belt setup on an aircon V belt model.

thanks in advance! :) :)

Did a quick google search and found this
efi_110_1.jpg

Shows the belts at least.

Hope this helps a little

Hi mate :)

I did actually spot that online myself, but thanks for taking the time to find it and post it!

Yes I can see that there's some kind of compressor mount which appears to have a built in tensioner aswell.

I was hoping someone would have an engine in front of them so they could take some close ups!

Cheers :)

BTW the belt tensioner is not built in, it is a separate part.

Just had a quick look in Haynes, early Range Rovers had the alternator mounted where the air con compressor is on the later models. I think there is a mounting bracket rather than the cast aluminium arm that supports the compressor. So I would suspect you need to search for an early 3.5 alternator and mount but be aware the early alternators were not particularly pokey, the biggest was a Lucas 20/25ACR, 66 AMP.

KEV!

Thats superb, thanks a lot for those pics, and the info! :D

Yes, i was aware that the early alternator was on the drivers side, to be honest i wasnt sure if this early engine had a different front end though, ie, would it fit a 3.5 EFi model...?

Anyway, your motor looks exactly the same as mine, just with added bracketry, so if i can find something similar, like you say, i could be onto a winner.

The AC tensioner looks the same as the water pump tensioner from the pic you provided, makes sense. Also the AC pump mount look like i could pick up an alternator mounting there, looks similar. I am currently using Lucas 70amp which is original spec for my Disco, i get these from Euro Car Parts for about £38, another one of those would do the job nicely.

Anyway best get searching for range rover parts then i suppose.

Thankyou sir :)

I have indeed! I was looking a while back cos the bearing has gone in mine basically. I pulled out the cap, rinsed and regreased and machined a cap to fit in the end. I now run the belt really loose so an not to overwork it.

Could be a problem when it comes to fitting an alternator!!

Anyway, work in progress :D

Well, it should keep you out of trouble for 5 minutes!! Once I get mine fixed we should hook up, you're not that far away really. You ever get across to N.Wales for a spot of laning?

Im actually planning a bit of a Wales excursion for the semi-distant future, so yeah will give you a shout :)

I'd be interested to see how you get on with this. I've been looking into it myself recently, I'll keep you updated if I make any progress!!!

Any progress on this?? I've picked up an sd1 alternator, sd1 bracket, and an air con pump bracket as well. One day I might find time to see if any of it fits!!

No but thanks for updating the thread.

I have a couple of aircon pumps and brackets watching on eBay at the moment, mainly to remind me that I eventually need to buy one. Not had the cash available recently to delve I to a new project like twin alternator so haven't even made an attempt to start.

It will happen when I have time and money to throw at it! :D
