The Rangie P38 we bought last year with a cooked engine is going to have a Turner Top Hat short motor, we have done 4500 miles since last July but it has very bad oil consumption.

Turners have been excellent to deal with, the engine arrived in a snowstorm but was really well packaged and brought inside immediately.

We have a spare complete 4.6 Thor engine, plus there's the one in the car. We want to build the new one up complete without taking the car off the road until we are ready for the swap.

A new front timing cover/oil pump is here, new llifters on the way, a Victor Reinz gasket set is on the shelf and a new Bearmach water pump ordered.

I'll post some more pictures when we start the build.

Never seen a new block myself so probably a silly question, but why the irregular shaped 'cut-outs' in the block exposing the camshaft? They look to have been punched out rather than machined.
 
They are in the casting, not machined or punched. Needed to drain the valley area.
The block is refurbished, not a new one, it retains its old number with an 'R' punched at the end.

I'm fascinated by the honing marks. They don't look very deep, though it may be the angle of the pictures. My engine rebuild is using oil and the honing being too fine is top of the list of suspects.
 
Running in is fairly important on these engines, I had a genuine Rover short engine in 2009 which I ran in carefully and still had the honing marks at 45k miles later.
That didn't use much oil at all and ran on LPG (Discovery 2 V8, multipoint LPG)
We have always used 10W-40 diesel engine oil.

Peter, would you mind taking another photo of the honing marks perhaps from a different angle. I'm just trying to compare them to mine.

I'm hoping mine has glazed the bores while running in. (The turbo was passing a lot of oil at that time so this may have caused glazing) I'm currently running it with Millers glaze bust oil in it. In fact, it's done that and now I'm waiting for their standard running in oil to be delivered. Snow has held that up. Up to 500 miles allowed with the running in oil and then back to the 10w40 and see if things have improved.
 
Those two pictures were taken with an old Sony Mavica MVC-FD200, with a 2mp sensor. In one of those strange happenings, the Macro performance of that sensor and lens is far better than my bigger cameras.
