Hi people. New to this and land rovers! Bought a 1999 freelander diesel yesterday. She needs a turbo replacement... Big job? I can't find any videos or tutorials anywhere online... any help appreciated.

Never attacked the turbo.

I suggest you have a read on the 'Rave' workshop manual from LR. Details on downloading and installing it here...

You'll need the version for the early L Series models. There will definitely be a section from removing/installing the turbo. You need a Windows PC to run the manual on, there's instruction on that thread how to do it.

I'd imagine you either have to remove the plenum/inlet manifold and attack it from the top, or you'll need to remove the IRD to attack it from the bottom.

If you need to remove the top stuff, it will be a good opportunity to give it a good clear out to remove the years of gunk that has built up inside. If you need to remove the IRD, it may be an opportunity to replace the clutch if that's nearing the end of its life.

Hopefully you will get more detailed advice. Good luck.
