Hello, today I was driving on the highway with around 2.7k-3k rpm with my freelander 1 td automatic diesel and all of a sudden the turbo whistle went away which comes whenever i accelerate.

Is it normal in the first place for turbos to whistle under acceleration/load? I searched a bit and got some mixed results but mostly saying that it might be a leak or something. Also a mechanic who heard the sound of this whistle from my car said it was normal.

After driving around 30-35 min with 3k rpm the whistle went suddenly away and i thought i blew the turbo or engine but I think i might hear it slightly as i accelerated hard afterwards, just a little sound from it maybe.

Anyways my question is if the turbo might be broken now?

Td4 Freelander 1 turbo kicks in about 1750RPM with a whistle.

If no whistle most likely problem is either a boost hose or the small vacuum hoses that feed the turbo operating vanes.

Might be an idea to take the inlet pipe off & check the turbine for play, etc ?

My son's 2004 started following the whistle noise with a screech. Turbo bearing seals failed a few weeks later. It dumped loads of oil into the exhaust & inlet, followed by engine running even when switched off. Managed to stop it by engaging drive before it screamed it's balls out !!

Does anyone know the name of the turbo hose part in the circled part of the picture? Mine is split there and I didnt even notice before someone pointed it out from looking at the picture here..

And is it for hot or cold side?

You’ll find part numbers here.
If keeping, I’d replace all the hoses with silicone

Thanks for all the help, it turns out I was blind.
Not my picture but to the right circle is where it was just open and disconnected… It got loose as I was driving and most likely due to me handling the plastic tubing when I was replacing the airfilter.

I opened the left one in the circle as well but it was just dirty and cleaned with brake clean, which is maybe not a good idea on plastic or rubber parts but I used only a little.

Also before there was always a loud turbo noise which I thought was normal but I think not anymore because now I tightened the clamps and deleted fault codes and it doesnt seem to smoke anymore and better acceleration with very little turbo sound..

There is still slight lag when pressing the gas pedal but i think its fine
