Hi, this is my first post after my introduction post.

I have the following question: while doing some maintenance on my Freelander TD4 2003 auto trying to troubleshoot loss of engine power i noticed something that seems weird to me.

The 3 hoses coming out of the turbo solenoid seem to me to be not routed correctly.

The top hose (the braided one) is just hanging loos in under the hood, no filter attached.

The middle one is connected to the turbo.

And the bottom one (thicker tube) is connected to a black metal pipe on the left side of the engine.


So i think the top and bottom tubes have been switch at some point?


Searching for posts on the forum about this i have found photos of the solenoid and explanations but its not obvious to me where the top braided hose has to connect to.

Can any one clarify this to me?

I guess the pipe only should have that filter attached PHB000450 if coming from bottom opening of the solenoid. The top one should go to the reservoir on the right of the engine and the middle one to the turbo.
 
PS The reservoir one on goes up from the solenoid and the back of the engine along the injectors to the reservoir.

Ok thanks this makes sense now seeing that diagram.
Does the braided tube from the top outlet of the solenoid connect to the front facing part of the reservoir like in the diagram or connecting to the back side is ok. I ask this as the front has a tube in it going to a t split and the back has nothing connected.

And can this have done any damage to the turbo or engine as this has been wrongly connected for a few years probably..

will go and connect it as it should be and see how it runs.
 
That's not correct, as the metal pipe is the IRD breather, and should be open to the atmosphere.

Ok thanks so the IRD had no breather all this time, can that cause any damage? As i see there is an oil leak under/back of the engine next to the turbo.

I'd replace all the vac pipes, and route them exactly as in the diagram.
It's unlikely to damage the engine, but it'll have very poor performance, and the brakes will also likely be heavier than they should.

It's unlikely to damage the IRD, although check the oil level.
Oil leak can be from anywhere, best clean it off, so you can see where it's coming from.

thanks Nodge68 this really reassure me a lot! and the turbo its self should als not be affected by this you think?

Will reroute the hoses and see how she runs.

Yes, the top outlet connects to the front, at least that was my understanding and that's how I use it. The rear one on mine goes to the T-split. No sure how others have it.
 
So i changed the hoses today and wow what a difference, she takes of smoother and has way more power. Thanks all for helping:)

Now i will clean and inspect the leak, looked again today and i think its coming from the intercooler to turbo hose. Here is a photo.
