I'm going my first landy tune up. As I look at components I find genuine Land rover, Lucus and off the rack versions of the same product are available.
There's a Lucus distributor in itnow so I figured it original.
Here's my question...am I better off using the Lucus, matching the distributor, figuring a priority part. The genuine Lr or off the rake. Does it really make a difference.
 
I do prefer Lucas bits, recently Lucas wheel cylinders and a new fuse box, and for the Cheap price a Land Rover air filter cheap enough, l like the mintex brake shoes which now pulling up fast and straight, I do like decent oil too, I have a 200di in mine and when I stripped it down there was no sludge or sticky areas in inside where oil turned to gunge , so I use a shell helix oil which keeps it clean inside as you don’t want oil holes clogging up

I would use Lucas parts if you can, but there are good quality alternatives out there too if you cannot buy Lucas. Buy the best quality parts you can, but I find LR are overpriced for spares, so not necessarily my first choice. Lucas are OEM anyway in most cases, if they are available to you. The only issue I have had is new condensers failing straight out of the packet! It’s pot luck really.
I like NGK plugs, Lucas leads, points, rotor arm and coils. I use Fram or Crosland oil filters, with Halfords Classic engine oil.
Bit of a mixed bag of parts, but they work for me.
 
If I clarifiy "available" most likely I would be ordering from the UK. Living in the US I'm not sure what Id find around here for a om knownon ripoff price. I just know my wife's Volvo is strictly Volvo parts, so if figured the rover might be the same.
I know I'll go with a better quality part. I wanted to hear it from knowledgeable members.
 
If your asking about the members, I'd have to say great. They have all been a help to a new series 3owner.
as for the prices, I know you great what you pay for but also it easy to be taken advantage of in a somewhat specialty market...at least here in the US
 
Tune up.. check the points condition and gap. Check plug gaps. Check tappet gaps.
Check/set the ignition timing, of it won't stay set then the distributor could be worn.
Check the rotor arm and cap, give both a dry wipe over. Dot of oil down the centre of the distributor.
Check/set the carb. Check for play in the butterfly spindle.
Check/adjust brakes all round
 
Clean the swivel balls, spray anti corrosion on the hard brake pipes and unions, silicon oil on the hoses. Anti corrosion on the brake adjusters. Check inspect chassis/frame for corrosion.
 
Thank to all, your reminding me of things I most likely would over look.
As for the chassis corrosion, wow I am truly aware just how bad that is. Fighting to be able to get the rover stored inside my garage to really address the problem.
The longer I live the landy I realize that it not in bad shape except for the chassis.
 
Something tells me I am in a better position to afford an education in continuous chassis repair as a posed to the cost of a galvanized new one.
If I fail...there always plan b or g as it were.
