From cold the glow plug lamp should light as soon as you turn ignition on and stay lit for around seven seconds whilst fuel pump runs and glow plugs heat, then go out. No glow plugs when engine is hot.

all of the above if i try to start when glow plug goes out it tturns over trys its hardest to start.... but if i wait a little longer for the relay to click it will start stright away ..

i have to turn the glow plug on for 3 times before i start then everyone has to stand well clear of the resulting black smoke !!! LOL

Sorry mate

I've read this several times but I still can't get my head round it.

You turn on the ignition - the glow plug light comes on - after about seven seconds the glow plug light goes out - you then reckon that there's another seven/eight second wait before the glow plug relay clicks.

As always with these cars I've still got a lot to learn but I'll be astonished if the glow plug light is not controlled by the glow plug relay. Are you sure that it's the glow plug relay that you can hear?

Is it possible that you've got another issue like a weak in-tank pump, porous leak off pipes or something that delays the starting?

And to add what is rapidly becoming my mantra on here, please adjust your personal settings to give us a clue where you are. There might be a helpful P38 wizard living locally to you but you'll never know unless you tell us where that is.

I will have you know i have had 2 sets of shiny new glow plugs put in since i have owned it, 18 months !!!!!! and the turn on 3 times came from 2 other p38 owners who have been through this malarky...
Have found kicking the tyres , beating bonnet with large branch etc, though quite futile !
Still i can't complain cos the resulting black smoke has sorted my greenfly problem.. !!!
Am also pleased you find my arse tight ... was worried it was getting a little saggy ..
