Hi all, recently I have started getting a noise reminiscent of a large trapped cricket which seems to come from the large black box on the drivers side of my 2003 HSE 4.4. It is not there first thing but after it has been driven and and parked it is there when i come back to it. it goes soon after i start driving again but is very annoying and hopefully not a sign of anything serious, my question is, has anyone come across this issue and if so what was it? I have searched against "strange noise" but to no avail.

I believe there is a cooling fan in there, to cool the Ecu etc, maybe its that.

The cooling fans I believe are sleeve bearings. The grease dries out rather quickly and you end up with plastic on plastic. That quickly leads to the fan running off balance.

A cheap fix is to squirt in some silicon based grease into the sleeve of the fan, it'll silence any noise for some time. Although if when tearing down the fan you get a lot of black powder, that is a sign the sleeve is heavily worn and you'll need to replace it.

Haha just sitting here in my dads L322 and has the same sound coming from the centre of the dash and only there after a drive
